August 13, 2026 | I invite you to watch a video of the entry into the port of Gdynia by the newly launched, christened the day before, frigate ORP Wicher. Although, to be precise, for now, it's just 'Wicher', and it will only be possible to call it 'ORP Wicher' once its naval ensign is raised and it is commissioned. For now, the ship was christened with this legendary name the day before, and on the day of filming, it was launched from the semi-submersible transport barge BOA Barge 33 in the waters of the Bay of Gdansk, off Gdynia Oksywie. After a successful launch and several hull checks, the Wicher, now safely afloat, was towed back to the PGZ Shipyard in Gdynia, from where it set sail that same day after 6 a.m., still aboard the aforementioned semi-submersible barge. The frigate itself is the result of the launch of the Polish government's Miecznik program, which envisions the construction of two additional frigates of this type at the PGZ Shipyard in Gdynia. The keel for the next one, the future ORP Burza, was laid last year, and immediately after Wicher left the closed hall, construction of Burza began in full swing in that closed hall. The future ORP Huragan will also be constructed, with the first sheet metal burning taking place in April of this year, and the keel laying scheduled for November. The Mieczniks are intended to replace the aging American Oliver Hazard Perry guided-missile frigates, which were received from the United States in 2000. One of these frigates, the ORP Gen. T. Kosciuszko, ceremonially 'introduced' the hull of the future ORP Wicher at the beginning of the formation, with officials and media representatives on board. In the footage shot in Gdynia port near the Emigration Museum (very crowded and popular that day), we can see a unique view of the old ship (Kosciuszko) and the new, future ship (Wicher), which will soon replace it. The towing operation ended near the quay belonging to the PGZ Shipyard, where Wicher was turned around by port tugboats and moored to the pier, where further work awaits her. After all, she is only a hull for now; she still needs to be equipped with weapons, radars, sonars, and all other necessary operating components. It must be said that whenever modern frigates such as the French Aquitaine, the Italian Luigi Rizzo, the Danish Esbern Snare, or the Dutch Tromp have visited the port of Gdynia, they have inspired admiration with their size, technology, and strength. It's heartwarming to see that a similar, if not the largest and best-armed, frigate is being built in Poland, in Gdynia: a frigate of the Miecznik program, the future ORP Wicher and subsequent ones - ORP Burza and ORP Huragan... and that day, we could admire her, majestically gliding through the waters of Gdynia's port. A beautiful thing and a huge milestone for Polish shipbuilding industry and the Polish Navy. 😉🇵🇱
