Why are Thailand and Cambodia in conflict? 🇹🇭🇰🇭

After exploring the beauty, culture and everyday life of Thailand, I wanted to understand another side of the country — its history, its relationship with neighbouring Cambodia, and the tensions surrounding their shared border.

Many people have been talking about this conflict, and I wanted to learn more: Where did it begin? What are the historical reasons behind it? Why has the border become such a sensitive issue? And what should we understand before forming an opinion?

In this video, I react to a documentary about the Thailand–Cambodia conflict and explore the background behind this complicated situation.

This is not just about two countries facing tensions. It is also about history, territory, national identity and the events that can shape relationships between neighbouring nations for generations.

I'm continuing my journey to understand Thailand beyond the beautiful places, the culture and the people that first caught my attention.

ประเทศเขมรเปิดฉากโจมตีประเทศไทยก่อน โดยใช้ BM21 ยิงใส่ โรงพยาบาล โรงเรียน ปั้มน่ำมันเอกชน ทำให้ประชาชนคนไทยเสียชีวิตจำนวนมาก สิ่งนี้คนไทยรับไม่ได้ อีกทั้งประเทศเขมรแอบข้ามแดนมาวางระเบิดทำให้ทหารไทยต้องเสียขาหลายสิบนาย ทั้งหมดคือคือความเลวร้ายของเขมร ประชาชนคนไทยจึงไม่คัดค้านที่ทหารไทยเปิดสงครามกับเขมร เพื่อตอบโต้

ประเทศกัมพูชา มีผู้นำบ้าบอ จนลามมาถึงให้ประชนมีพฤติกรรม ตรรกะผิดเพี้ยนไปหมด ทหารไทยไม่เคยทำให้พลเรือนกัมพูชาบาดเจ็บแม้แต่คนเดียว เอาเป็นว่าไม่ต้องไปย้อนถึงอดีตร้อยๆปีหรอก ไทยยึดกติกา พร้อมที่จะทำตามกฏหมายสากลมาตลอด กัมพูชาพูดจาเลอะเทอะ พูดเรื่องโกหกหน้าด้านๆ ก็คิดดูมันรูปเครื่องบินดับไฟอเมริกา มาอ้างว่าเป็นเครื่องบินไทยโปรยสารพิษ

A little known fact : Thailand provided refuge to Cambodian people fleeing the Khmer Rouge regime. Yet, after receiving help, some later claimed the very land that had sheltered them as their own.
To us, this feels like a betrayal of the kindness Thailand once showed. We hold no grudge and have no desire to invade anyone. We are simply defending our sovereignty.

You have likely seen Nene Royal introduce herself by saying, "I'm from Phuket, Thailand." This statement carries political significance because there is a tendency in various online communities for Cambodians to claim that famous Thai figures—such as Lisa (BLACKPINK), Buakaw (Muay Thai champion), and Tony Jaa (renowned actor), as well as other athletes, singers, musicians, and actors—are actually Cambodian. If someone is famous, Cambodia often claims them as their own. In Nene’s case, several Cambodian YouTubers even fabricated evidence suggesting her parents were Cambodian immigrants who had moved to Phuket; consequently, Nene has repeatedly emphasized to the media that she and her family are genuinely Thai. It is not just famous Thai individuals; Cambodia frequently claims ownership of anything Thai—including food, art, Muay Thai, traditional attire, and culture—leading to the coining of the term "Claimbodia."

Some Cambodians hold the absurd belief that all surrounding modern-day countries were once part of Cambodian territory. They try to claim that Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar used to be under the Cambodian Kingdom and are now demanding the return of everything—including the cultures food and traditions found in those countries. They argue that everything present today belongs to them, which explains why you see various ownership claims from Cambodia nowadays.

As for the disputed border areas, the conflict stems from the exact same cause. Even though Thailand and the United Nations have evidence showing that the UN requested Thailand to open these areas to assist refugees, Cambodian claims persist that the UN actually purchased that land from Thailand for Cambodia. This twisted version of history was fabricated by Cambodian leaders for political gain

It’s just a story about a neighbor with a mental illness. It all started when they fought among themselves and ended up killing each other, leaving the house covered in bodies. Some managed to escape, and my family helped take care of them, providing shelter, food, and water. But one day, when that neighbor fully recovered, they showed nothing but ingratitude, jealousy, and greed. They put on an act, created a false image, lied, and deceived. They tried to do everything and claimed all sorts of things—whether true or not—based on whatever they could imagine, without caring about the methods, just because they desperately wanted attention and validation. They went as far as shooting and killing someone in my house first. Yet, they turned around and wailed hysterically as if they were dying, claiming they were the one being harmed by me, and slandered me with all kinds of false accusations. In reality, I only slapped their face to teach them a lesson, kicked them out of my house, closed the door, and built a wall to completely cut ties because I utterly loathed their wretched nature. ... If you had a neighbor like this, what would you think? 😊

Did you know that under normal circumstances, Cambodian citizens cross the border to seek medical treatment in Thai hospitals? Many are impoverished; while some can afford the costs, others cannot, leaving Thailand to shoulder an annual burden of 800 million baht in unrecoverable medical expenses incurred by foreign nationals.

The situation escalated to the point of requiring fighter jets because Cambodia fired BM-21 rockets at a hospital and a gas station—an attack that claimed eight lives, including three children aged seven or eight. Thai authorities ordered the military to immediately neutralize this threat using fighter aircraft. Although there have been numerous border skirmishes in the past, fighter jets had never been deployed before, as previous threats to civilians had not reached such a critical level of severity.

Thailand and Cambodia differ vastly in terms of economic size and military strength. In the event of a full-scale conflict, Cambodia would likely be unable to hold out for more than ten days—much like the situation Vietnam once faced. In reality, the Thai people are peace-loving; however, Cambodia must respect the border and refrain from aggressive actions or provocations against Thailand.

The "Khmer Empire" did not actually exist.
In the past, what Thai people refer to as the "Khom culture" era was actually a cultural sphere comprising diverse ethnic groups.

To visualize this, think of the Roman Empire, which spanned from England to Turkey and Persia. You certainly wouldn't consider the entire Roman Empire to be made up solely of Italians, would you? The answer is no.

In the beginning, the rockets hit Thai soil, targeting petrol stations, convenience stores, and hospitals. That is why we have no alternative but to take out the threats to our innocent civilians.

Cambodia often plays the victim and accuses Thailand of aggression just because they think the international community views them as a small country and assumes they wouldn't dare provoke, fire first, or start trouble with Thailand. But in reality, the opposite is true. Cambodia uses this loophole to provoke, plant landmines, and shoot at Thailand first on multiple occasions, starting wars due to their own domestic politics to boost their leader's popularity every single time. We have satellite evidence, clips, and various media captured by Thai soldiers from Cambodian troops after attacking and driving them off Thai soil.

Thailand was merely defending itself and reclaiming territory that once allowed Cambodians fleeing internal civil war and the Khmer Rouge genocide to temporarily take shelter in Thailand. However, when the conflict settled, some of them refused to return, instead squatting on Thai land, betraying us, and completely forgetting the kindness and generosity of the Thai people.

It started with distorted history indoctrinated by French colonialism portraying Khmer Empire as a dominant power in the region in order to colonize the whole region including Siam (Thailand). In fact, Siam had ruled over Cambodia for 432 years before the French came to snatch Cambodia from Siam.

A note, BM21 is Russian weapon used by Cambodia is an unguided multi-launcher missiles. Cambodia army claimed that they aimed at the Thai Army, however they are aware that these missiles are unguided and uncontrollably. That's an oxymoron statement.
