Since the 13th century, through trade routes and the influence of Islamic sultanates on the coast, many Dayak groups downstream have embraced Islam. These Muslim Dayak groups have successfully combined their Dayak cultural roots with Islamic observance, creating a unique socio-religious identity in Kalimantan.
