Update: here is a new video with an even easier setup process: The Easiest Retro Gaming TV Box Setup

The ONN 4K Plus streaming device does way more than just play your favorite video apps. In this video I'll show you how to set it up to play retro games, too. Now that the Fire Stick experience is severely locked down, this is probably the cheapest and easiest way to play retro games on your TV.

As always, your commitment to budget and extreme budget gaming is commendable

I remember setting up a very clunky TV emulation rig using an old laptop in the mid-2000s. Had the laptop sitting on a milk crate with tons of wires leading out looking like a science experiment, and I used to sit on the coffee table to play it because of the controller cord. Here we are 20 years later doing the same thing with a $30 hockey puck and a TV remote where everything's wireless and seamless. We've come a long way

I love that Russ explores these cheaper options as an alternative to the sometimes expensive handheld devices. I recently followed his guide for Amazon FireStick and it was a real hit at a recent family gathering. I love introducing our grandkids to the video games of my youth, etc. Yeah man - now I am gonna have a snack.

Crazy how far we have come.

For anyone outside the US, the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd gen has identical specs and also costs around $30.

That actually looks pretty decent lol. Man, emulation has made some serious strides.

I’ve said it before but it bears repeating—Russ, your patience, diligence, and expertise are a godsend to the retro gaming community, thank you for your work! You are the epitome of “communicator” in all of the most sought after ways—you are clear, comprehensive, and engaging. As a writer, I envy your ability to be economical while still being extensive. Kudos, as always, and though I have no interest in the Walmart box, I watched this video start-to-finish and am better for it.

I like videos like this because of GIFT IDEAS.

$30 for an emulation setup for friends and family is something I'll watch content about, Russ.

When I saw that this booted up Google TV, I wondered “would this work on my Hisense CanvasTV?” The answer is yes, no Walmart box needed, enjoying SNES titles in my living room with the SN30 now - modern life is amazing!!!!

It's genuinely impressive how far retro emulation has come in the past few years

Who would've thought you could run Dreamcast and N64 games on a $30 Walmart device? Salute!

Bruh. I gotta tell you. I hate Retroarch so much, but this video has helped me understand so much about it. Thanks so much dude.

This is such a clean “$30 → legit emulation box” walkthrough. Appreciate you keeping it realistic (internal 16GB first, then the honest hub/splitter caveats) + the RetroArch setup tips are gold, Vulkan swap, hotkeys, core presets/overrides, and the shader picks were super digestible. Also, enormous respect for the ROM/BIOS disclaimer and for focusing on workflow rather than sketchy sourcing. CtrlAble

You made me realize I already have a Google-enabled TV and after installing everything I found out it also has 32gb in storage. So, now I have thousands of games on it.

Thing is, I want something like Emulation Station's UI. It's so much more intuitive.

Solid idea. Just an aside, CX file explorer you can navigate to any remote computer on the same network and copy the files directly, which would speed up/simplify that portion of this.

I remember repurposing a second hand OUYA for this kind of setup haha. This looks so much better.

It is - 7 degrees Fahrenheit here in New England. Time to warm up with our favorite Hawaiian dude and his dulcet tones.

Im not here for a 30 dollar walmart TV. Im just here to say thank you. Russ, you're the goat. You got me into a new hobby. Whenever you upload my day gets a little better. I started in emulaton around the time that the RP Flip 2 came out, and I couldn't be happier to b here. Thank you for showing up in my feed. I never buy a handheld before checking your channel.

Also thanks for making me the high school nerd of the year lmao

You've probably done this before, but this is the best retroarch guide I have ever seen, in general.
I need to change some settings on my raspberry pi now. Thanks!
