There are still neighborhoods in Tokyo where time flows slowly.
The place I visited this time is Minowabashi, the terminus of the Tokyo Sakura Tram Toden Arakawa Line.
Although it is not a place well-known to Korean travelers, it is a great neighborhood to experience Tokyo's retro vibe, where trams arrive slowly and old shopping streets and worn-out signboards remain.
Near Minowabashi, there is a shopping street where you can find shops that capture the essence of local life, such as side dish stores, bento box shops, and old tea houses.
And the main destination of this walk was the old soba restaurant, Sunaba.
Sunaba is a soba restaurant located near Minowabashi Station.
The building is said to be a hinoki structure built in 1954, making it over 70 years old.
The history of the shop itself is even older; it is a long-established soba restaurant dating back to the Edo period, and the current owner is the 14th generation.
I initially went in for the atmosphere, but after eating the soba, it became a memorable place because of the taste.
The soba noodles, which held their moisture firmly, felt great as they absorbed the tsuyu (dipping sauce), and the aroma and chewy texture of the noodles were impressive.
The soba broth served at the end was also special.
It was much heavier and richer than at other places, so when poured over the tsuyu and drunk, the nutty buckwheat aroma lingered for a long time.
The tempura also exceeded expectations.
When dipped in the hot tempura tsuyu, the warmth and crispness of the fried food were well preserved, and the batter on the shrimp tempura was incredibly crispy and melted in my mouth. After eating soba,
I drank coffee at Kohikan by the tracks and watched the Sakura Tram come and go outside the window.
Not the Tokyo that passes by quickly, but the Tokyo that can only be seen by arriving slowly.
Minowaba was a small, quiet half-day getaway where streetcars, old shopping streets, and a bowl of soba came together.
