My observation after years of watch collecting, reading and watching wonderful watch videos like this, is that the branding and brand strength are the strongest attribute for a watch. The reason is that mechanical watches are currently irrelevant toys, which qualities are measured solely by our subjective perception. A branding is what shapes all attributes of an object, making it more desirable for us. Everything else is secondary with lesser ot greater importance.

Cheap watches are great, but they are disposable. They will rarely become heirlooms, they won't be sitting on someones children's or great grand children's wrists, decades from now. So on a cost of wear basis, I'm more than happy to spend a bit more for a good mechanical watch.

I look at expensive watches as a work of art. And while I can't afford them I can still appreciate them for the craftsmanship that goes into creating them. These talented and skilled watchmakers are not less artist than Picasso or Rembrandt.

I wear a Seiko 5 sport GMT as a daily beater & it was less than $400 brand new. Beat it, dent it, scratch it; don't care. The +/-$500 Seiko watch is the single most convincing argument AGAINST Grand Seiko; what are you getting for $5k-$10k when >$0.5k is banging?

I reckon George Daniel’s was the best because he knew when to stop : he took a hand-made piece to the point where is was actually going to be better finished on a machine , and then he stopped. That was the art of it. He was bling-averse.

I buy and restore Vintage Timex watches, mostly M24 movements. They have more appeal to me than most new watches. My newest watch purchase wasa Timex 1976 Rotary Phone Dial Reissue (Quartz movement) and it gets more attention and inquiries than $ Five Figure priced watches... Oh yeah, for a watch, it keeps GREAT time too !
