For nearly two thousand years, a few dozen people lived on St Kilda, a remote archipelago in the North Atlantic, surviving almost entirely on wild seabirds. They had no harbour, no shop, no doctor, no policeman and, for most of their history, almost no money. Then, on the morning of 29 August 1930, the last 36 residents left their homes behind. Nobody has lived there since.

But what actually broke St Kilda? It wasn't starvation, a single storm, or the disappearance of the birds. Disease, outside contact, migration, changing society and economic pressure gradually weakened a community that had survived for almost 2,000 years. This is the story of St Kilda's extraordinary way of life, its mysterious decline, and the final evacuation that left the island abandoned.
