What a great exercise! Once I heard it, it felt like, "Duh! That makes perfect sense!" It something that is so simple, yet somehow I haven't thought of!

Chelsea you’re just wonderful as a teacher and  artist.  Thank you.

I teach watercolor…I have my students use a white piece of YUPO paper and punch a small hole in the center of a small square.  You can then lay the YUPO square on top of your photograph and match the color.  Because YUPO is plastic you can wiped the color off with watercolor and reuse over and over.  It works great.  This was a wonderful lesson for oil and acrylics thank you for sharing.

this reminds me two of the most important lectures i had when i was beginning to paint.
(i paint digitally so there might be some mistranslation when it comes to painting )
one is that real life often never go above the 50% saturation mark on any digital program, and full whites and full darks are impossible to see ( even when you stare at the sun XD)
and the 2nd is that we see in contrast, even when the values saturation and hue may be off, as long as the contrast stays the same, the study will look ok (also saturation hue and values can be interchangeable based on intent)
which kind of leads to the problem with most artistic problems are just intent problems, because most often than not, we just like to shoot arrows for shootings sake, no matter if there is a target or not XP
awesome video as always!

what a great lesson thankyou Chelsea

This is among the most helpful of your many wonderful videos, Chelsea. I love that you share your thinking process, rather than just demonstrating your physical process. Thank you.

You are an amazing instructor! This is such a helpful video!

been looking for this exact kind of video. your chanel is a great find

I feel so stupid...I have a glass palette, but never thought of putting a master reference under it.  You are a GEM of an instructor, thank you!!!  PS:  your paintings are gorgeous

Painting color in light (high key)  is one of the primary reasons that I don't like painting with acrylics. In my experience acrylics dry darker than they are when applied which was the source of a lot of frustration for me as a painter that paints about 80% of my work as high key. Oils dry the same or very close to same as they were when wet. Same but the opposite with water color which dries lighter than when wet.

Oh my gosh through trial and error I actually have a pretty similar colour palette to you.

CONGRATULATIONS CHELSEA, for winning  your OPA award.. and I love the idea of getting color swatches from Home Depot here.❤😂

Makes sense.

I don't paint oils. But this is still totally relevant to creating the colors I want and valuable information! Thank you!💕

This is a genius mixing idea. Thank you!

Very nice. Thank you.

Thank you.
