What started as an impromptu Saturday drive to JB turned into a completely unplanned day in Kulai.
We left Singapore at around 6:45am, crossed via Tuas Checkpoint… then took a wrong turn. Instead of turning back, we thought — why not explore Kulai?
That little detour turned into a full day of colourful back lanes, a local wet market, plenty of food, supermarket shopping, a much-needed massage and, eventually, an evening around Taman Pelangi before heading back to Singapore.
In this video, we wander through Kulai’s mural streets, explore Pasar Basah Kulai, discover water caltrops try the popular beef, pork and seafood noodles at Mok Jiu Restaurant, and somehow find room for even more food afterwards. 😄
We also make our compulsory Econsave stop — including my tempeh stock-up — before heading back towards Johor Bahru.
As traffic started building, we decided there was only one sensible thing to do: eat again. 😂
Our evening took us to Taman Pelangi, where a fully booked Kyu Izakaya led us to Kyuten Robatayaki , followed by a long queue that made us curious enough to investigate. That turned out to be Yamada Beancurd, a popular evening beancurd stall in Taman Pelangi. It generally operates in the evening and is known for flavours including original and pandan.
And because apparently we still hadn't eaten enough, we finished our adventure at Le Pain Cafe, a Korean-style café in Taman Kebun Teh serving Korean food, fried chicken, drinks and French-inspired desserts.
No real itinerary. No carefully planned route. Just a wrong turn, good food and one very spontaneous Johor day trip. Sometimes those are the best kind. ❤️
