This video is about Kami-Shakujii Station, located in Nerima Ward. North of Kami-Shakujii Station is the Kami-Shakujii Maintenance Section (Engineering Department), and south of the station are the train depot and sidings. The tracks at the Kami-Shakujii train depot are equipped with a special double slip switch.

Kami-Shakujii Station has two platforms and three tracks. Platforms 2 and 3 share the same track. Therefore, trains on both the up and down lines cannot wait for each other at the same time.

The tracks facing platforms 2 and 3 are also used by trains turning around and entering/exiting the depot, so they are surprisingly busy. (During the daytime, this middle track is used for express and local train connections on the up line.)

As a side note, a two-platform, three-track structure with platforms on both sides of the middle track is sometimes seen on Seibu Railway and JR lines. Similar examples, though with differences in detail, include Tanashi Station (Seibu Shinjuku Line) and Tamagawa-Josui Station (Seibu Haijima Line).

Similar examples on JR lines include Higashi-Jujo Station and Kamata Station (Keihin-Tohoku Line), and Nishi-Kujo Station (Osaka Loop Line/JR Yumesaki Line).

These stations, including Kami-Shakujii Station, are designed to allow passengers using the terminating trains to transfer without using stairs.

The double slip switch at the Kami-Shakujii train depot is located in an inaccessible area. It's only barely possible to photograph it with a telephoto lens. The double slip switch seems to be very useful because many trains need to be parked in a limited space.

I made an early morning visit to see the double slip switch being used when trains depart in the early morning and evening.

In the early morning, many trains seemed to be being transferred from the Kami-Shakujii train depot to Tanashi Station and other locations.

On the Seibu Shinjuku Line, grade separation projects are underway to address the problem of frequently closed level crossings and to integrate the line with urban areas. Elevated tracks are planned near Kami-Shakujii Station. The Kami-Shakujii train depot is also expected to be elevated. (The depot is planned to be reduced in size during the elevation project.)

The double slip switch installed at the depot may disappear once the tracks are elevated.
