For eighteen years, Hassan Nasrallah was the most watched, least seen man in the Middle East. At little after 6pm on September 27, 2024, the Israeli Air Force put more than eighty bombs on top of him, eighteen meters underground.

This is the story of the eighteen year hunt for the leader of Hezbollah.

It begins with an Israeli missile. In February 1992, Israeli helicopters kill Hezbollah's leader Abbas Musawi on a road in southern Lebanon. The next day the movement elects his student, a 31 year old son of a vegetable seller from Beirut. Israel had just created the man who would taunt it for three decades. In 2000 he tells a crowd in Bint Jbeil that Israel is "weaker than a spider web."

After the 2006 war he vanishes underground, speaking only through couriers and recorded video, protected by a counterintelligence unit hunting spies inside his own ranks. But Hezbollah's new underground network had a problem. Israel had recruited people in Lebanon to help build its secret facilities, and others to plant listening devices inside the bunkers. He called Israel a spider web. He was living inside one.

The end comes with a countdown. On September 17, 2024, thousands of Hezbollah pagers explode at once. Two days later Nasrallah admits on television that his organization has been hit in an unprecedented way. Iran warns him to leave Lebanon. He stays. Israel has known where he is for months.

On Friday, September 27, Israel's defense chiefs meet, and the final go comes by phone from Netanyahu's hotel room in New York, hours before his speech at the UN. Washington gets fifteen minutes of warning. F-15Is of 69 Squadron, the Hammers, drop 2,000 pound bunker busters with staggered fuzes that chew through the buildings floor by floor. An Israeli Air Force colonel later puts the number on record: 83 bombs. Nasrallah dies beside Hezbollah's southern front commander Ali Karaki and the IRGC general Abbas Nilforoushan.
