Before Willie Mays died for a strange reason I had been thinking about him for about a week - God Bless you Willie Mays and love from your pal forever, Joe Nania in Harlem , New York !

For those of us that didn’t get to see Willie Mayes play at Candlestick bc we lived too far away In Sacramento and I was still a child ,,,,,,we heard it on the radio and that sports announcer was Lon Simmons ⚾️He was the voice 🎙of the SF Giants

Got to watch this amazing player hit a 430 ft homer in Atlanta Stadium in 1968. I loved Willie who didn’t?

Two of my all-time favorites.
Willie Mays and Lon Simmons
Rest In Peace
My very first visit to Candlestick 10 APR 1970 he stole a homerun from the Red's Tolan, catching the ball at the TOP of the fence all a while colliding with Bobby Bonds...
Mays was 39 years of age!
As an 8 year old kid, seeing that one spectacular feat 55:55 proved everything that I had heard people say about his greatness.
I loved Simmons so much that for as long as he called the Forty Niner games, I muted Summeral & Madden on my television set and tuned in Lon on the radio.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY started to watch the B/W TV got to see Mays, Aaron and Clemente as a kid. I became a huge fan... My All-Time favorite MLB Outfield are Aaron LF / Mays CF / Clemente RF. I used to copy both Mays and Clemente with the basket catches while playing pickup baseball and stick ball back in the day. I still play Ball to this day, playing Senior Softball tournaments. Clemente will always be my Puerto Rican hero.... And I wear #21 or #24 for Softball jerseys.

One thing about Mays that he doesn't get enough credit for is that Mays had a great attitude - never saw him lose his temper, on or off the field - never heard him bad mouth anyone.

The catch in 1954- that center field wall was 450 feet from home plate - no outfielder today has to cover that much turf - that's why the catch won't be duplicated.
