Does Jesus’ Resurrection PROVE Christianity?

MythVision Podcast

Suppose Jesus truly died, was buried, and physically rose from the dead. Would that prove Christianity, or would one question still remain: Who raised Jesus?

In this MythVision documentary, my Christian friend Apollos presents his strongest philosophical case that the resurrection would identify the God of Israel and vindicate Jesus. I present his argument fairly, then explain why I remain skeptical that the historical evidence establishes a bodily resurrection or an independently verified prediction from Jesus.

We examine the resurrection of Jesus, Paul’s testimony, the Gospel of Mark, the appearances to Peter and James, early Christian belief, miracle claims, Bayesian reasoning, signal theory, aliens, deceptive spirits, competing gods, and natural explanations involving grief, visions, memory, scripture, and legend.

Apollos funded this documentary so his argument could be presented in full alongside an honest skeptical response. Hear both sides and decide: If Jesus rose from the dead, does that prove Christianity?

It was a blast collaborating once again with you @MythVisionPodcast ! We go a long way back into 2022, when I debated Carlos Xavier on High Christology on your channel (before I became a conservative Christian). Even though we disagree on whether the resurrection happened, we can walk away as good friends with a deeper and more robust understanding, in this case, on how unique causal inferences are made! Regardless, I don't think this underdetermination problem gets enough credit in philosophy or religious epistemology. It also has a lot of applications to interdenominational discussions as well.

This research was presented at:
- A (regional) EPS conference.
- A graduate philosophy of religion final course paper (PAPER LINK IN VIDEO'S DESCRIPTION).
- A few other debates and discussions on my channel.

Please be on the lookout for this same argument to be presented at a couple of future venues including:
- A talk with @TavoSanAbri about the new argument
- A book I'm writing, ready for release in a few months
- A certain Christian Apologetics conference in Texas

A big thanks to all the Christians and skeptics who tuned-in too! I hope you walked away with an even greater appreciation for these topics, and I highly endorse Derek Lambert for his documentary production. It's highly affordable, and he's willing to collaborate with even Christian Apologists (as long as he gets to have his own input and say too). Anywho, hope you all enjoyed!🙂

This has always bothered me, if he came back from the dead “triumphed over death”
HE WOULD STILL BE HERE.

What’s the point of coming back from the dead only to die again…

This was definitely a unique video, had no idea Apollos would fund one from you, haha, thanks! I remember he discussed this topic of aliens doing the ressurection with Juan (Modern Atheism).

Jesus did not literally rise bodily from the dead as the Gospels describe. The Gospel resurrection accounts are theological storytelling, not straightforward historical reporting. But within the first-century Jewish-Christian movement, belief in his resurrection functioned as divine authentication of Jesus and as an eschatological sign that Israel’s promised restoration was at hand.

Minimal facts: a corpse coming back to life is, in the age of the universe, impossible

When you die, oxygen quits arriving at all the cells in your body. All the cells. Every one. Without oxygen, the cells’ Krebs cycle (which makes ATP fuel) quits. Without fuel, the sodium-potassium pumps in the cell membrane quit. Sodium diffuses from outside the cell (high concentration) to inside the cell (up till now low concentration). The extra sodium pulls water with it (osmosis). The cell swells and pops.

When a person —every time, any person— dies, trillions of cells in their body pop. Fall apart. Disintegrate. Lysosomal membranes break, releasing the cell's own digestive enzymes, and they digest the remnants further.

“Came back to life” would mean each of those cells un-popping, and all their little ruptured and digested organelles coming back together. The probability of that happening is zero.

Not exactly zero. But thermodynamically the chance of it happening in the age of the universe is…effectively zero. Think of a train full of chicken eggs. The train crashes. All the eggs fall and break. You drive up and see 1 million broken eggs on the ground. It is thermodynamically possible for them all to spontaneously come back together, but the time you would have to wait for that to happen (to be 50% likely) is much longer than the age of the universe. Longer than the age of the universe. IOW, it can't happen. It is impossible.

The probability of a trillion popped cells, or a million broken eggs, spontaneously un-breaking and each coming back together is, in the age of the universe, zero.

THAT’S the probability apologists want you to think is greater than the probability that their guesses are wrong about the motivations of people they don’t know, in a culture they’ve never lived in, 2,000 years ago.

lol, I always thought, if aliens were to fit anywhere in the story, it would be that the aliens gave Paul a vision and sat back to let human imagination do the rest. Paul belongs to some mystic Jewish sect and gets a vision by the alien orb that briefly blinds him with alien rays or what have you -> Paul writes the books and tries to explain things according to his limited info -> Off to the races. Its important to keep in mind that Paul wrote things first and the gospels were written some 70-100 years later. Plenty of time to let the story play out like most skeptics look at it (the Christian bible as Greek fanfic.)

Resurrection is a DMT trip

@munbruk 3 days ago

Two hings are conflated here. There's the resurrection of the dead for the day of judgment. There is the ascension of some special people close to God, like Jesus, prophets, martyrs, witnesses, like Moses, Elijah, etc. They are alive now, we don't know how. So some early gentile Christians wanted to conflate that spiritual ascension of Jesus in a body that you can't describe (Paul was right) to a bodily resurrection, ie a zombie resurrection. Because they were dealing with pagans and Jews who did not believe in that. When they tell people: Jesus is alive now, they get rebuked by no he is dead . So they came up with a physical scenario so that none could doubts it; Jesus was raised in his eartly body and flew like a bird:. That cenario created more doubt about the story itself. You can't sustain a lie forever.

Man just wonder if he may simply survived from the cross rather than die, most likely than aliens tech resurection.

@martijnlinssen4204 3 days ago

Mark invented the resurrection, partly as reaction to Marcion.
He blames the Marcionite women for nobody knowing in 16:8, and that's why he ends there: it is his entire point.
Luke strikes back in 24:9-10, exonerating the women and blaming the disciples instead.
Matthew dissolves the whole predicament with his 28:8-9 where Jesus outruns both women and disciples

Mark stresses the death of Jesus FIVE TIMES (15:37, 49, 44a, 44b, 45) and both Luke and Matthew 180 that into the bare minimum, with Matthew even never saying that Jesus is dead.
Last but not least, Matthew inventing the body snatching story instead of Mark is a dead give away that the story developed after Mark

I mean really, just look at what Jesus ACHIEVES after his death: nothing at all. What's the whole point?

passover plot needs reading.

That's what happens when you base your religion on Greek classics, not a religious book from God telling you exactly what you need to know. A true religion should not be held hostage of one historic event. Was there an empty tomb? I don't know, I wasn't there. Actually who cares? How is that relevant to anything?
