Can you really know that you are saved? Can a Christian have genuine assurance of salvation—or could you be justified today and lost tomorrow?
In this live Bible teaching, Joel Settecase of The Think Institute presents the biblical case for assurance of salvation, justification by faith alone, and the perseverance of those whom Jesus Christ saves.
We’ll answer four foundational questions:
• Why do we need salvation?
• What is salvation?
• How are we saved?
• Can we lose our salvation?
We’ll examine passages including 1 John 5:11–13, John 10:27–30, Romans 8, Ephesians 2, Titus 3, Romans 3, and Ephesians 2:8–9 and see why Christians can have real assurance in Christ.
We’ll also compare the biblical teaching on salvation with Roman Catholic doctrine concerning justification, baptism, mortal sin, penance, perseverance, and the possibility of losing a state of grace.
Finally, we’ll walk through 11 biblical tests from 1 John that can help believers examine themselves—not as a way of earning salvation, but as evidence of genuine spiritual life.
Big Idea: You can be certain that Jesus has saved you.
The Think Institute exists to equip Christians to understand and defend the biblical worldview, answer objections to Christianity, and become confident Christian apologists who can defend the faith by the book.

I’ve been saved for over 40 years and I pray every day that I enter into heaven 90% plus that percentage has grown over the years through the love of God in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit I will probably be keeping the streets of gold clean, but I will be eternally happy doing so
1. According to the Catholic Church: Justification is on-going process through faith and through sanctification.
According to the Reformers: Justification is once-for-all and is by faith alone, in Latin sola fide. Sanctification is separated from justification but must come after faith-alone justification.
New Testament was written in Greek. The phrase "justified by faith" appears four times in the New Testament (Rom. 3:28, 5:1, Gal. 2:16, 3:24). The Greek tenses of those four verses do not support a completed justification by faith alone. The verb “justified” in Rom. 3:28 is written in Greek passive present tense with infinitive mood while that of Rom. 5:1 is verb participle in passive aorist tense and that of the last two is in Greek passive aorist tense with subjunctive mood. All those tenses do not indicate once for all justification by faith. The present tense with infinitive mood of Rom. 3:28 indicates a continuous or on-going action . In Rom. 5:1 verb participle in aorist tense indicates undefined action . The subjunctive mood of Gal. 2:16 and 3:24 expresses a possibility, probability, exhortation, or axiomatic concept. If Scripture teaches faith-alone justification, then the Holy Spirit would inspire Paul to write “justified” in Greek passive perfect tense. Unlike that of English Greek perfect tense indicates the action described by the verb was completed in the past with continuing effect to the (speaker’s or writer’s) present .
2. According to the Catholic Church: Through justification we are transformed from our unrighteous state to righteous one. We cannot and do not become self-righteous – our righteousness comes from God and by grace through Christ is infused in us or we are made righteous (Rom. 5:19). We cannot be righteous and sinner at the same time, therefore our entire sins (past, present, future) must be removed or washed away.
According to the Reformers: Through Justification an exchange takes place between believers and Christ, known as double imputation. Believers get Christ’ righteousness imputed/counted on them as if His righteousness were theirs while they remain sinners. Christ got the entire sins of believers (past, present, future) imputed/counted on Him as if those sins were His while He remains sinless.
Scripture denies double imputation in Eze. 18:20 (ESV): “The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” According to Scripture we cannot be righteous and sinner at the same time; Eze. 33:13 says (ESV): “The righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins. Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die." According to Scripture it is righteousness that delivers from death (Pro. 10:2, 11:4). “Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live” (Pro. 11:19, ESV). “In the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death” (Pro. 12:28, ESV). Jesus said in Mat. 25:46 that the righteous shall go to eternal life; they are righteous from what they did (verses 34-35) according to what 1 Jo. 3:7 (ESV) says: “Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he [Christ] is righteous”.
