I know they say money doesn’t bring happiness, but it sure as hell relieves a lot of the depressing crap that we have to deal with

I’m 24, I recognized this a couple months ago. Deleted all social media, I’ll only watch YouTube videos not even the shorts, too addictive. Suddenly, I have hours back in my day where I can explore hobbies and focus on developing skills that will be useful to me as I get older. They’ve built a nice cushy trap for us to fall into anti social, anxious consumers who do nothing but work sleep and buy things.

"Just go outside, bro" I do. Every day. It doesn't work.

What’s fascinating to me is that this isn’t an adulthood thing. I’m a junior (almost senior) in high school, and this mindset of constant productivity is taught in school. I’m constantly being told that if I’m not working, I’m wasting my time. Even our “free time” is spent doing homework because there’s always more to do, and if you stop, it’ll build up. I think this mindset isn’t only the product of highlight reels, but also the American school system. It really does train people to be good little workers who never get a break. You always have to be working, even at home. If you don’t, you’re shamed by your teachers or you compare yourself to higher-achieving classmates who work nonstop. It’s a never-ending cycle, and it’s exhausting. Even on spring break, my time to rest, the only thing I could think about was how much schoolwork I could be getting done if I didn’t rest or do something I enjoy. School is a nightmare, and it’s basically a productivity factory.

No money, no love, no hope.
Simple as.

For me its the fact that 90% of my time and 99% of my energy goes to working and I have nothing left for myself, my home, my family, or my friends. I exist to work yet have nothing because the cost of simply existing is too high.

I think that if there are generations of people after GenZ and Alpha, they'll look back on these times the way we look at the WW2, the Great Depression, and the Vietnam War all in one ☠️

I feel sorry for younger people. We all go through a post-adolescent existential/ideological crisis, but current global and social conditions make it so much more difficult to navigate and, I'd argue, much more difficult to come out the other side with a solid concept of self.

I will say, I'm on the younger end of Gen X, and covid blew up my routines in the best way. I loved my new routine/rituals and hated having to go back to the old ones. But I'm an outlier, I guess.

anti depressants, anti anxiety, painkillers, cannabis, good old liquor….. its scary how much shit we’re taking to mask.

the 40 hr work week Got rid of our rituals. Forced us to Get rid of Our rituals for fear that we would lose our jobs and end up homeless if we took a moment to be human.

edit: after looking at my options and seeing musk's latest achievement, i'll follow in the footsteps of johnny silverhand

Don't forget how it's impossible to find a genuine connection. Everything is shallow. No one wants to open up

i have friends, hobbies and things i like to do. i don't need rituals. i need to see the point of all this. when the people feel like they have so little time left, i feel like i have way too much of it. cause when you can't afford to do anything, there's nothing much to look forward to.

eta: i'm not even on social media so that's not why i feel like this.

I don’t like it when people say I’m being to gloomy. I’ve come to terms with reality, not my perception of it. Ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away, and if anything makes it worse.

@cruxtopher101 4 months ago

This isn't applicable to Gen Z alone. I'm 39 and so much of what's being described is a shared experience paralleling my own.

@Cephris 4 months ago

It's like this by and large for millennials as well. We really don't have it any better. When we talked about it we were absolutely belittled for it 10-15 years ago. Finally now people are starting to wake up to how absolutely screwed everything is. Everything is so expensive it's insane. Everything has been turned into a subscription. Everything is behind some kind of digital paywall. Everyone is severely underpaid.

@Ben-vg6ox 2 months ago

Even going outside is miserable tbh , crowds everywhere , everything is so expensive

I was watching an interview with a happiness researcher who observed that what makes us feel content is loving and being loved—specifically, doing things for others.

Can’t do much for others through a screen.

Can’t do much for others when you have no money.

Can’t do much for others when you live alone.

It’s amazing we have any moments of happiness at all.
