Sting Sued By Bandmates Andy Summers & Stewart Copeland Over Royalties For Every Breath You Take Royalties in 2025 The Police Lawsuit. Andy claims that he was not paid for the iconic guitar riff that was played on the 1983 hit, which was sampled numerous times. the track is also the most played song on radio of all time.

What if the most iconic riff in pop history — the one that defines Every Breath You Take — was never properly paid for? That’s exactly what guitarist Andy Summers claims, and in 2025, he’s finally taking Sting to court. Along with drummer Stewart Copeland, Summers says millions in royalties were wrongly kept from him. But this lawsuit isn’t just about money — it’s about legacy, betrayal, and who truly owns a classic.

Andy Summers and Steward Copeland deserve their own fair share of royalties and cuts regarding the said song and possibly others...the old style rules need to be looked at and changed!!

Somebody call the Police!

@masajhn 11 months ago

All of them are part of that master piece they deserved to be paid

Summer’s guitar work is the most important part of that song for me. It’s what makes the song what it is. You could pretty much put any lyrics to it, and it still would have been a huge hit.

far beyond most session players" they weren't session players they were band members. There is a obvious difference.

The brilliance of The Police is the band, everyone is the force of it. It is the blend of all. As it should be.......

As much as I like Sting, the Police songs would not be what they are without the brilliant dynamics that Summers and Copeland brought to the table.

For Andy not to be on the credits is absurd.

Murder by Numbers was a Sting/ Summers Collab. The original version by Sting was replaced by Andy Summers guitar part and given co writing credit. Every breath you take is the same, the song going nowhere yet Andy's work makes it the hit.

I think this is not going to be easy to win for Andy and Stewart, but I wish them both to get a fair compensation.

They should have credits for all Police's songs. They are so important in Police's sound...

@ianmcdonald3902 11 months ago

It was a police song. All three should be credited equally.. .sting was not the police!!!

Have loved the Police for decades, fabulous songs and amazing backings BUT I still feel that the credits for "Every breath you Take" should include Andy and Stewart CLEARLY for their part, and as well as financially. Sadly this will probably be sorted out in a British court and make the lawyers VERY rich as well as possibly NOT do very much for Andy and Stewart. We will wait and see.

Without the police sting would not been this successful.

This matter has already been adjudicated and the verdict delivered on the " Whiter Shade of Pale" song recording. The iconic organ part , like Andy Summer's guitar riff, was judged as being so instrumental to the song's success, that it deserved a writing credit.

You're right. It's not a question a money for Sting. It's a question of pride. One of Sting's tour was called : "My songs". All is said.

That is a crazy-hard song to play too. That guitar part is tough. Good for Andy and Stewert. I've hated Gordon since he broke-up The Police.

Brian Robertson said the same thing about Phil Lynott in THN LIZZY "Don't Believe A Word"

The unique approach of each member is what made The Police's music so memorable, to this day their riffs, fills and composition still is a masterclass. Unlikely pop music they weren't hired axes, so their claiming are fair.
