The bit where you play the vocal melody on the keyboard is beautiful.

“Works of art make rules; rules do not make works of art” - Claude Debussy

I always thought “It Smells Like Teen Spirit” meant it smells like a rebellion, an uprising.

I was working for Sonic Youth on their tour of Europe in 1991. The first gig was in Cork. I met a music journalist friend, Keith Cameron, there and asked him if he'd come to interview/review Sonic Youth. No, he said. Nirvana. I hadn't heard of them: they were the support act for the tour. Keith said I should watch them, so I did. I made sure to watch them for all the other dates. They were absolutely amazing. There is a film of that tour called 1991: The Year Punk Broke. And i'm in it... very very briefly :-)

Kurt's melodies had so much emotion in them he was a deep person

Completely mis-titled. This is EVERY major rule to follow in writing a hit song. Contrast is THE number one rule. Great melody. Another rule.

Wasn’t looking for a music video. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for not being 15 minutes of AI slop 😊

3:59 if that's true it says a lot about who Kurt was that he asked permission to use some silly shit his friend wrote on a wall.

"this song is now over 30 years old."  Thanks for reminding me... 😭

Interesting fact: When Weird Al did the music video for his parody, he managed to film it in the same studio with many of the same people as the original music video

The verse for Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of the most enigmatic and best melodies ever.

Kurt really played it down on what he knew on guitar. He understood a lot more than he let on.

Songs having titles that are never mentioned in the lyrics was prominent during the '90s.

it's refreshing to find really good authentic content like this 👍🏻

Man i remember when that song and video dropped in the early 90s, even as a kid i knew right then and there that music had changed forever, goddamn we destroyed everything in sight when it came on at full volume haha, what a time to be alive

What I would have given to see Nirvana play More than a Feeling and then go straight into Smells Like Teen Spirit. I was a little bit too young to appreciate it when Nirvana was around.

9:31 This is actually backwards, the band was more than happy with Butch's original mixes & were unhappy with how slick & polished Andy Wallace's mix was (Andy being brought in at the label's request). In fact whenever Kurt had to reference something on nevermind, he always played a tape of Butch's mixes, never the finished album

To: Scott, Kurt, Chris, and Layne. An easy life without purpose becomes unbearable.

I'm a huge fan of Cobain but I'm gonna take his not knowing musical theory with a grain of salt. He came from a family of musicians. Was taught by his aunt (piano and singing) and uncle (guitar) who were professionals. And later by Warren Mason who was a scholar in music theory and very patient with his students. Kurt was no scholar but he did know music theory. Him leading the MTV Unplugged show is one example of this.
