For beginners who want to practice bonsai wiring but aren't sure where to start or how to apply it — the key is to simplify. Work with a tree that has fewer branches, and apply one wire per branch. You don't need a tangled web of wires. By running a single, appropriately thick wire firmly from the base to the tip of each branch, you can bring branches down and control their direction with ease.
In this video, Kazuya Tsuruhisa uses a Shimpaku juniper seedling to demonstrate the full process — from initial preparation to shaping a moyogi (informal upright) style, one branch at a time. If you have material on hand, you can try this right now!
