The Dark Story of Alcatraz — The Escape-Proof Fortress and Its Bloodiest Uprising

A mile and a quarter of the coldest water on the West Coast was the only wall Alcatraz ever really needed. For twenty-nine years, the Rock held the men no other federal prison could contain — Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, and the escape artists and killers of the gangster era. It is still standing today, and there is now a serious proposal to reopen it. This is its entire story.
In this video, we trace Alcatraz from a barren, Spanish-named rock and Civil War fortress, through its 1934 transformation into the "escape-proof" federal penitentiary built to break America's most notorious criminals, to the Battle of Alcatraz in 1946 that left two officers dead and brought the United States Marines onto American soil, and the 1962 escape of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, who vanished into the bay and were never found. We cover the myth of the Birdman, the real reason the fortress closed in 1963, the Native American occupation, and the modern plan to rebuild it as a prison all over again.
Alcatraz was sold to America as escape-proof. What actually made it a fortress was the water — and the water is the same thing that finally beat it.
