If you must send a messenger for a need,
Send one who is wise, and do not (over-)instruct him.
And if an advisor should one day approach you,
Do not distance yourself from him, nor push him away.
And if the way of a matter becomes obscure to you,
Consult one who is perceptive, and do not defy his counsel.
And diminish not the right of one who holds it,
For severing ties lies in diminishing it.
And never recount in an assembly
A tale unless you have mastered its details fully.
And attribute the saying to its proper source,
For authenticity lies in its attribution.
And be not overly eager, for many a man
Who is eager, is ruined by his own eagerness.
And how many a youth is deficient in mind,
Though people may marvel at his appearance.
And another whom you might deem a simpleton,
Yet brings you the very core of the matter.
I have worn the nights (lived through life), and they have worn me out,
And Time has draped me in its own worn garment.
