I love how when his life is threatened, or his love interest’s life is threatened, and Bond seemingly finds himself on the loosing end of a fight, he remains calm, collected and ready to turn the tables. But when he looses in gambling, his face just drops and he panics lol 😂
You have to remember this is a little time after bond got his 00 license, literally a rookie in his first, major, important mission. His success or failure would greatly define his career in the eyes of MI6. He was unexperienced, brash, impulsive, egotistical (more than usual) and arrogant, to the point of not giving a damn about the repercussions and wanting to shiv le chiffre out of anger. He commited some rookie mistakes: drank the poisoned martini, lost the bet, got caught and was at the mercy of le chiffre, and so on, somebody always came and bailed him out of his mistakes. He learned his trade on a trial by fire, and got lucky.
After going through every Bond film I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see Bond grab a knife and be fully prepared to break cover and just kill the target.
The connection these two actors create between Bond and Leiter is pure magic. The spy meets spy with a mutual interest and respect moment is intense and immersive.
"You see, Mr. Bond, my hippos are clearly more hungry than yours."
