I got a 95.75% overall in my exams and my mom is still disappointed in me because my friend got more. Like, wtf?? I didn't even think my score was THAT bad but she made me feel like shit about it.

I’m Asian from Japan and I’ve been studying English for around 3 years. the academic system in my school focuses on studying a lot. We have constant tests/exams. If you’re a returnee like me, we are required to take English tests once a year and participate in speaking contests bc our English level is higher than the normal classes. This part makes immense pressure on me bc if I get one red mark (1-3) on my report card, I get kicked out of the class immediately. Playing games in my house isn’t allowed and I have to deposit my phone to my parents downstairs before going upstairs to study. If I get an A and A+ that is good, if I get lower than that my parents scold me and slap me really hard. (this is why when I get a low score on my assignments and tests I sometimes cry because I know what will happen to me and the consequences) But the school system isn’t that bad either, friends I can talk to and relate about teachers/homework. Some of the cram school teachers that my friend has gets pissed off easily if one of us can’t solve a question or make multiple mistakes. Some teachers announced the ranks in the class in my school which is a nightmare because I don’t want to know my rank. I also have to show my parents every tests I take to show the score. For maths if it’s 8+ that’s ok, for Japanese if it’s 15+ that’s ok,  for English is it’s 18+ then that’s ok. Anything below that has consequences. It’s really painful sometimes but it’s because I know I didn’t study that well. I always thought this education system and household rules were normal all over the world but I guess it’s not for everyone. I’m currently studying for my mid term exams (writing this during my 5 min break)

Ts sounds like a dystopian novel

0:08 I feel bad for the Asian kids 😭😭

I hated school but I was almost always on time to my classes. I also had pretty good attendance where I’m almost always there.

But I only locked in to do my work when I was a senior

As a Kuwaiti, look at west Asia bro we even look for excuses to not study but we either way should

Dude, it is crazy how they study them at such a young age

A baby is smarter than my 6 year old brother😔

I can't imagine having my childhood years this focused on school, that really takes away much of what's special in those young years. In my experience, I've always been kind of a lazy guy and never studied much but now in university I am realizing it's more important than ever, so I think you should lock in only when you start to need to and not just studying for no reason at young ages but I guess do what you want

And yet parent didn't do shit in school too

10:05 this happens because people most of the times don't know how to act differently, that's the way that they were taught, that's the "norm" in their mind because that's what they learned early in life. Sometimes, people keep doing it even if they know that it's wrong because it's so subconscious , that's the first thing they do in quick response situations, and then forget because that's "the norm", continuing the generational trauma

15:10 so they usually are just all kinds of differnt things, not only what you've learned, there's no specific part you can study for it, it's just everything

Wow I can not imagine this! My parents always push me to do my best and get disappointed if I get like less than an A-, but they don’t force me to study until all my grades r perfect. This is so sad.

If I live in that country I would have PTSD big time.

I'm from Indonesia (in Asia) and don't think that the entire Asia studies strictly, in Indonesia getting an 80 is okay, not bad

I have a Chinese background, I moved to Australia at 2 years old because my parents thought I would have a better life in Australia, my parents were extremely poor growing up and they worked very hard with very harsh conditions and now we are upper middle class. I’m in middle school right now and when I went to China to visit my relatives and go places most cousins my age could not miss a day AT HOME because they would be behind if they didn’t do homework

Studying is hell bro 😭

I cannot believe how some systems treat struggling students like modern-day slaves, forcing them to stay late and trapping them in toxic environments. It is sickening to see collages push people to their absolute limits like this. We need to break this cycle of academic toxicity-I truly care about the well-being of students.

Bro's forcing a little baby to study
