Beautiful Island Villages Nestled in Every Cove / Walk Around the Island Village, Kakeroma-jima, Amami Islands (Kagoshima)
Kakeroma-jima is an island located southwest of Amami Oshima, across the Oshima Strait. It belongs to Setouchi Town. 95% of its total area is covered by forests and fields, with cultivated land accounting for only 1.6%. There are 30 settlements of varying sizes on the island. In the past, priestesses (noro) performed annual ceremonies such as prayers for a bountiful harvest and warding off disasters in each settlement. The "Shodon Shibaya," a folk performing art said to be a tradition of the Heike clan, is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. There is also a legend that Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo visited the island, and at the entrance to the Jikkyu settlement on the western end of the island is the Jikkyu Sanjiro Shrine, dedicated to Jikkyu Sanjiro, who is said to be his son. During the Taisho period, the natural harbor of Satsukawa Bay became a naval port, and at the end of the Pacific War, a base for the special attack torpedo boat "Shinyo" was established there. The subsequent literary works of Toshio Shimao, who served as a commander on this island, are rooted in his experiences there. With the launch of low-cost carrier (LCC) flights to Amami Oshima, the number of tourists visiting Kakeroma Island has increased, and new movements towards migration and settlement are being seen, such as the opening of guesthouses by people who have moved to the island from elsewhere.
