Jehovah’s Witnesses changed their rules concerning the four major components of blood. Will that be enough for people to start leaving the organization? Why will this change shake one person, bring relief to another, while a third simply asks, “What’s for dinner?”
I talk about three hypothetical people who seem equally devout at the Kingdom Hall, though each experiences their faith differently. I also return to my own experience: after giving birth, I refused an offered blood transfusion and did not consider any other decision for even a moment. I look at how faith intertwines with identity, how group pressure works, and why we can live with contradictory beliefs.
There’s cognitive dissonance, the sunk-cost effect, and a deeply personal question: would admitting that the rule was wrong mean calling the meaning of one’s own suffering into question? I also talk about the hope I feel with every new change—that perhaps this time, someone close to us whom we miss will get in touch.

25 lat temu jego młodszy brat zmarł w szpitalu (nie pamiętam dokładnie co mu bylo) potrzebował transfuzji ale rodzicie odmówili i kupowali jakieś środki zastępcze i mój kolega opowiadał jak lekarz namawiał ich do krwi ale oni byli uparci.... Teraz 25 lat później jak się okazało że nagle można ... Pożegnali się z SJ szkoda że kosztowało ich to śmierć dziecka....
Ja: szkoda, bo może jednak miałbyś szansę zoperować to zużyte biodro (żaden profesor się nie chce podjąć ze wzgledu na stan zdrowia i odmowę przyjęcia ewentualnej transfuzji).
Tata: to muszę zmienić dyspozycje.

Nauczyłam się gryźć w język - najważniejsze, że znalazłam celny argument, który wyleczył konkretny przejaw fanatyzmu w minutę.
