Trading was part of Dan Hodgman’s life before he was old enough to understand what the markets were. His father was an old-school floor trader, and some of Dan’s earliest memories are of hearing him call in for bond prices from home. Dan eventually started trading around 2008, then stepped away to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps before returning to the trading floor and learning how the business was moving from pits to screens.

One experience changed the way he looked at risk forever: watching a trader take a position far outside the firm’s rules and create a major impact with a single trade. That moment helped lead Dan into the prop and evaluation world, where he spent just under nine years at Topstep before moving deeper into the business side of the industry. Today, he serves as VP of Business Development at NinjaTrader.

In this episode of Funded, host Maryam Rushdi sits down with Dan in London to talk about growing up around trading, leaving college for the Marine Corps, returning to the markets, and watching futures trading evolve from crowded pits and paper statements to a market that can now be accessed from almost anywhere.

Dan also breaks down the mistakes he sees newer traders make: focusing on money too early, trying to replace a 15-year career in six months, trading markets that move faster than their risk tolerance can handle, and caring more about being right than being profitable. He shares the risk lessons his father taught him, why discipline requires accountability, and why sometimes the right move is to quit for the day without quitting the journey.

This one is about risk, patience, accountability and staying in the game long enough to actually become good at it.
