They should have planned from the start that the trip would take however long it needs to take to travel at a safe speed.  It seems positively ludicrous to speed through icebergs at night and look what happened.  This was 100% avoidable.

I put this on just to fall asleep to with no intention of focusing on it, but in less than 13 minutes they've gotten so many things wrong or left out that I can't take it anymore.

It's nice to see somebody get the "need for speed" correct.  Titanic was never going even come close to the speeds of the Lusitania and Mauretania.   But TIMING for arrival at NYC was everything.   Bruce Ismay (Chairman of the White Star Line) and Captain Smith were aiming to beat the maiden voyage time of Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympic.  It was a pride thing for masters and builders -- each successive ship should have a "bragging right".  

Cunard's Mauretania tried to do this several months after Lusitania's 1907 maiden voyage.  She failed to break Lusitania's speed records on her maiden voyage (subtly they tried).  Mauretania's maiden voyage arrival was barely covered in the press compared to Lusitania's first arrival (of note....Lusitania was a massive move forward in the capabilities of shipbuilding in this era.  She also had captured the Blue Riband, which restored a lot of shipping industry pride back to Great Britain after having lost that speed battle to the Germans in the 1890's).  There are actually very few pictures of Mauretania's first NYC arrival.  Perhaps Ismay reflected on this greatly, and had worries about having Titanic's arrival being greeted with a yawn....Olympic had a grand welcoming in 1911.  They wanted Titanic to arrive early enough (the evening before, and be moored for a morning disembarking) so that the press could create/prepare/edit headlines of her arrival (it took hours to develop film for photos/layout the paper front pages/write the stories/create master templates for printing, etc... not minutes like today).  The tidal shift was also a factor.  


Often accounts simply paint Smith and Ismay as speed freaks, but it was a lot about efficiency and media perception.  Ismay was shooting for optics, not awards.   Had Titanic not been sunk I think she would have seen a greeting similar to Mauretania...essentially a deja-vu of something similar and great that had recently happened anyway.  Titanic was essentially a 99% clone of Olympic, as Mauretania was of the Lusitania.

What always puzzled me about Titanic. With all its technology built in. Is that it didn't have fixed beams on the bow. Or at least a powerful search beam on the crows nest.

It's difficult to blame one person when the iceberg was really what took the Titanic down literally unfortunately the crime was the crews refused to go back and rescue any passengers in the water 🌊. Unconscionable & no excuses.

The fact Phillips ignored the ice warnings and didnt pass them on , then told the Californian to piss off because he was busy certainly didnt help .

I never understood why they didn't build in the ability to flood each individual compartment. If the front five or six compartments were flooded, flood the aft compartments to balance the center of gravity to keep it afloat.

The implication that Titanic was even attempting to challenge the Blue Ribbon record is completely ridiculous. It was physically impossible for the Olympic Class to match the Mauritania in speed. Second, what evidence is there that they were trying to arrive early by “surprise”? If anything that would inconvenience passengers who had made arrangements based on the scheduled arrival time. It’s not like they could call an uber or book an earlier hotel on their photo, lol.

And there’s far too much speculation of what Capt Smith thought. The people in this documentary are experts in their fields, but they are not mind readers.

People keep claiming that "Titanics" speed was the problem:  Full-Speed-Ahead was standard procedure for passing through ice fields!  Speed increases the mass of the vessel, and makes it safer to pass through!  It is just ice:  Frozen water!  The Olympic Class ships were massive vessels! Fact: Olympic had linoleum floors in its dining area.  Titanic had carpeting.  Olympic, while in dock for "Desperate Repairs", also suddenly also got carpeting laid over its linoleum floors.  WHY? To make it look more like Titanic, and to hide its worn floors?

One point regarding the coal fire. The last cut from the iceberg went from boiler room six, and the two coal bunkers. Even if the bulkhead was weakened which I do doubt, water would have been flooding that coal bunker, directly from the icebergs cut. The door that held the water back for roughly an hour give or take iirc, was only ever meant to contain coal. Instead it acted as a make-shift water-tight door, until it couldn't.

I actually did not know about the coal fire until about 9 years ago. It contributed to the disaster weakening the bulk heads. The famous maritime crash in history. When I watch the 1997 movie, it's difficult to watch the horror part unfold. This really changed the safety of ships during that time. I am surprised that someone managed to get a picture of the actual iceberg that Titanic struck.
