There are fewer than 50 violin makers worldwide who still build violins in this way. This is one of them.
Experience the quiet precision of traditional violin making—just as violin makers have done for generations. In this feature-length film, we document the complete, uninterrupted process of handcrafting a professional master violin, from the raw block of wood to the final resonant tone.
Filmed in the historic region of Schönbach (Luby, Czech Republic), this workshop continues a legacy of over 100 years of unbroken guitar-making tradition. Inspired by the classical masters of Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Guarneri, the process respects both ancient tradition and the unique natural character of the wood.
You will witness every meticulous step of the craft:
Hand-selection and reading of seasoned Bosnian maple and Alpine spruce
Carving the delicate arch entirely by hand
Precise fitting of the bass bar and soundpost
Multiple coats of traditional varnish, naturally dried for over 8 weeks
Final assembly, stringing, and the first note
No voiceover. No music. No shortcuts.
Only the honest sounds of sharp chisels, fine hand planes, and the steady rhythm of a master craftsman at work. This is not a tutorial or a quick build; it is a slow, cinematic look at craftsmanship, patience, and living heritage.
Special thanks:
We would like to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Tomáš Skála and the Schönbach Violin Workshop for opening their doors to us and allowing us to document this rare craft. Their dedication to preserving the 100-year-old family tradition makes such instruments possible.
