Somehow "Newton avoiding the plague and the ladies" made me laugh harder the 2nd time

youre like, the greatest coffee wobbler. so precarious, not a drop spilled. mesmerizing

'And that would be the first of many things you wouldn't see'  😂

I guess I'm watching this again

So nice I get to capture these photons in my eyebuckets twice.

6:01 - “Newton is in his basement avoiding the plague and all the ladies…”

I almost blew coffee out my nose I laughed so hard! 😂

"You're not wearing this cause you want a comfortable, well fitting sweater. You're wearing this because you're celebrating salmon, I think. Ok bye!" hahaha I love the sweater!

The reason for "sonification" of sequential data, as it is called, is to harness the really amazing pattern detection mechanisms in our brains associated with hearing.  So, if we listened to the sonification of radio data from Jupiter every day, and one day it sounded different, we might easily recognize that difference and be alerted to some change in the planet.   Or, such a change might alert us to some new problem with our radio telescope.

This is awesome!

Hot take: I like the radio/listening analogy!  Our eyes are great imaging instruments: high angular resolution, very bad spectral resolution.  Our ears are great spectrometers: high spectral resolution, very bad angular resolution.   We can hear the difference between a pure tone and a chord with similar average frequency, but our eyes cannot (single frequency sodium light and an RGB display showing "orange" can appear the same).

Anyways a lot of radio telescopes are pretty good spectrometers within their band, so I think the "hearing" analogy works pretty well there! Similar for LIGO  😅.

Lost my PhD and my future career to PTSD ten years ago but bingeing on your videos makes me feel like I'm back in grad school:  Good times, sketchy "food", varied topics, trains of thought and endless plots that make me have to dig deep into my memory to makes sense of. The only thing missing is the narcissism of my advisor, but please don't. Ever.

Something I'd love to see a discussion on is the requisite high (extreme?) tolerance for ambiguity those of us in science absolutely HAVE to have.

On the pedantry thing (radio telescopy as 'listening"), I'll note that under some conditions Ag-Hg amalgam fillings and other dental hardware can act as a radio receiver and rectify AM radio signals. The resulting buzz/static (or even audible radio signals) is conveyed via bone conduction to the inner ear.

I had braces when I was a kid, and two Ag-Hg fillings in adjacent molars. My dad was station manager for an AM radio station. When I went to the station with him wearing my head gear, I could hear the outgoing broadcast. I also experienced buzzing from thunderstorms even ahead of the thunder or visible lightning flashes.

Hearing a radio signal was really weird. Knowing thunderstorms were approaching before anyone else knew was a little less weird. I was really happy when the orthodontist removed the inadvertant antenna.

I love how Angela brings things up like  "you know this right?" And I'm nodding along without a single clue, just happy to be here.

Genuinely though I love that she never talks down to us.

Hey Angela, Sasha here.

I'm a game developer and it doesn't sound much, but I'm dealing everyday with a stream of repeatable and uninteresting data. One of the routines is to fire sanity check every launch to detect faulty data in every table. If the data is incorrect or slightly off, I ring a certain tone that indicates that a problem is occured and I must look into it. However, as the project grown, errors piled up, and so the noises on start-up. In 3 months I could tell you every deviation I made just by ringing a sequence of sounds. I guess, you CAN listen to the data, if you know what lo listen to.

I hope it'll help you to in your scientific journey!

I think this radio telescope is actually way cooler than the idealized one because it's really cool to see just how simple the principle is and how far we've brought it beyond the basics!

My understanding of the sonification of data is about tapping into the incredible frequency and rhythm hardware we have in our ears and brain. We can hear patterns and changes in the audio frequency range that we cannot as easily detect with a visual plot on a graph. We also can get some sort of intuitive sense of the data if it is sonified. This is the value of  representing radio data as sound data.

I remember, as a teenager decades ago, reading "Frozen Star" by George Greenstein which talks about the death of stars (pulsars, black hole, white dwarfs). There is a chapter narrating the adventure of research team trying to get funds for a radio-telescope. They failed, so they decided to build their own one using material used in electrical lines provided by the brother of one the researchers. Several of their works and publications are based on that amateur radio-telescope!

"television rabbit ear antennas are a radio telescope" suddenly made me understand how pointing them worked. thanks.

if angela uploads twice i can double text all i want

Only 17 minutes in, but I'm knitting a while watching this video and I gasped when you held yours up. It's gorgeous! I love those fish and I'm so impressed.

"I don't want to get into antenna theory."
Da da da dum dooo
"So, let's get into antenna theory."
lol
