James Webb Space Telescope has revealed remarkable new details about 3I/ATLAS, the third known interstellar comet ever observed passing through our Solar System.

Webb directly detected methane in 3I/ATLAS—the first such detection for an interstellar visitor—and found that the comet is unusually rich in carbon dioxide compared with typical Solar System comets. Researchers also measured unusual carbon and deuterium ratios, providing clues that 3I/ATLAS formed in a very different environment from our own cosmic neighborhood.
