📚 That poem Brand keeps reciting is "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas, and hearing Thomas read it himself is something else. It's on Audible here: https://amzn.to/4ePlmvk

Was the poem a warning the whole time? 👇

Dr. Mann's Martian potato planting skills didn't go well on this planet, we understand his frustration.

There are no coincidences in a Christopher Nolan movie. Also, maybe the real villains were the friends we made along the way.

Time itself is the real villain in Interstellar. It's the only thing they are truly fighting the entire film.

Brand sending his own daughter away is something I think most people overlook, because we get caught up in the grief Murph is going through when she asks if her father intentionally left her on earth to die.

I seem to recall Dr. Mann's first name was Hugh. Hugh Mann.

Both Mann and Brand thought they were above that evolutionary limit, the need for self-survival. Both lied to themselves about their own nobility, whereas Cooper did not; we was (90%) honest the whole movie.

Actually, it's simple. Like drawing straws in reverse. Mann couldn't face the fact that he drew one of the short straws and didn't want to be left to die. The irony is that Cooper's sacrifice ended up being the long straw that saved humanity. (Tesseract intervention, his daughter's ability to save humanity, his love returns him to Amelia.

IMO, Dr mann was the ultimate villain because he understood what needed to happen and still refused. Brand told a "noble lie" to install human life somewhere, anywhere for humanity to survive.

Dr. Mann is more tragic to me. He behaves how most humans would I believe.

I always had the sense, after the fact, that Daddy Brand had facilitated the loop from the start, because he spoke to Coop as if he expected him.

"Death created time to grow the things it would kil"

He's a villain not because of what he knew but because how he interpreted what he knew and acted in the "incorrect way" (Most villains do this) by attempting to end Cooper and the rest of the mission before the best outcome came to be (Cooper in the tesseract)

16:05 If you take Interstellar at face value, the story seems straightforward: humanity is on the brink of extinction, and a group of brave explorers risk everything to find a new home among the stars. The antagonistic forces appear to be nature itself—blight, dust, gravity, and time. But if you tilt the lens just slightly and lean into a more playful, conspiratorial reading, a different “villain” emerges: Grandpa Donald.

Now, to be clear, Donald isn’t framed by the film as malicious. He’s not secretly sabotaging NASA, nor is he twirling a mustache in the background. But villains don’t always wear black hats. Sometimes they represent inertia, denial, and the quiet resistance to change that keeps humanity stuck exactly where it’s failing.

Donald is the embodiment of Earth-bound thinking.

Throughout the film, he is deeply rooted in the land—literally and philosophically. He’s a farmer, tied to cycles of corn, soil, and survival. While this grounding is admirable, it also blinds him. When Murph begins showing signs of intellectual curiosity and defiance, Donald’s instinct is not to nurture it but to suppress it. He supports the school’s revised history that dismisses the Apollo missions as propaganda, reinforcing a worldview where humanity’s greatest achievements are erased in favor of compliance and survival.

That matters more than it first appears.

Because the true conflict in Interstellar isn’t just about leaving Earth—it’s about whether humanity deserves to. The film repeatedly contrasts two mindsets: exploration versus stagnation, curiosity versus control, hope versus resignation. Cooper represents the drive to push beyond limits. Murph represents the future built on questioning assumptions. Donald, meanwhile, represents the gravitational pull of “this is how things are.”

And gravity, fittingly, is the central force of the movie.

If you think about it metaphorically, Donald is a kind of emotional gravity well. He keeps Murph grounded—too grounded. His influence contributes to her initial distrust of science institutions and delays her full embrace of the larger mission. He doesn’t cause the world’s problems, but he reinforces the mindset that allows those problems to persist unchecked.

In another sense, Donald is a relic of a world that already lost.

The blight has devastated crops. Society has abandoned innovation in favor of subsistence. Education has been rewritten to discourage ambition. And Donald accepts all of it. He adapts, survives, and carries on—but never questions the direction humanity has taken. That quiet acceptance is dangerous. It normalizes decline.

Contrast that with characters like Cooper or even Professor Brand, who—despite their flaws—refuse to accept extinction as inevitable. They act. They gamble. They risk everything on the possibility that humanity can be more than what it has become.

Donald never takes that leap.

And that’s what makes him, in this interpretive lens, the “villain.” Not because he’s evil, but because he represents the comfortable surrender to limits. He is the voice that says, “Stay here. Work the land. Don’t look up.” In a story where salvation depends on looking beyond the horizon—literally into another galaxy—that mindset is the most dangerous obstacle of all.

So while black holes bend spacetime and rogue planets threaten missions, the deeper threat in Interstellar might just be something much quieter: the belief that we’ve already gone as far as we should.

Grandpa Donald doesn’t destroy the world.

He just helps make sure no one tries hard enough to save it. 😀

Never noticed manns name is technically human and murphs name basically means “whatever can happen will happen” which in a way means a human will always lose or win to murphys law, which also means murph was the chosen one.

He should just say "I lied" once they were on the planet. It's not like they were gonna go without him.

I think Brandt and Mann are villains in their own ways, but Mann would be closer to a "true villain". Brandt was willing to sacrifice all of them on a long-shot he didn't actually believe in on the 1% chance it could save humanity whereas Mann was willing to sacrifice them all AND all of humanity to save himself.

the real villain is the oscars- this incredible film did not get one major category nomination

He simply acted out a truth of human behaviour.
He wasn’t good, just honest and a coward.

The Granpa wasn't the 'villain' but he is a foil to Dr. Man. Everything the grandpa did was try and keep Cooper from leaving his kids in the first place. He challenged his reasoning and accused him of abandoning them for his own selfish purposes. Man tested his resolve, but the grandfather tested his reasons.
