The Sufis had a technical name for the feeling of being alone in a room full of people: khalwat dar anjuman, solitude in the crowd. It is the fourth of eight principles laid down by Abd al-Khaliq Ghijduwani in twelfth-century Bukhara, the working method of the lineage later named after Baha al-Din Naqshband.
This film follows that principle from the loudest market on the Silk Road to your own dinner table. It covers wahsha (desolation) and uns (intimacy), ghurba (exile), Suhrawardi's Tale of Western Exile, Ayn al-Qudat's Complaint of the Stranger, and the Bukharan rule that closed the door of retreat. It ends with the test the tradition used to tell the wound from the station.
Dast ba kar, dil ba yar. The hand at work, the heart with the Friend.
SpiritualRelief explores the experience of Sufism transmitted through first-hand mystical accounts and forgotten books.
