The James Webb Space Telescope is looking so far into the universe’s past that scientists are seeing galaxies from only hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang — and some of what Webb is finding does not fit neatly into our previous picture of cosmic evolution.

One extraordinary example is MoM-z14, a galaxy whose light comes from when the universe was only about 280 million years old. Webb’s observations are revealing that the early universe contained surprisingly developed and chemically complex structures much earlier than expected.

Webb has also detected JADES-GS-z13-1, a galaxy from roughly 330 million years after the Big Bang showing unexpectedly bright hydrogen emission. At that time, much of the universe should still have been filled with neutral hydrogen capable of blocking this light — making the observation particularly puzzling.

These discoveries don't mean the Big Bang theory has been disproved. Instead, they are forcing astronomers to refine models of the first galaxies, black holes, stars, and the transition of the universe from its earliest state into the cosmos we see today.
