I have only walked it twice in my life, even though I am a Londoner
Once in the snowy winter of 1962, when I was tired and freezing 8 years old,
and again in 2014 when I was a 60 year old man.
But no so called London History is complete without a Ghostie Story.
When I was 60, and walked down there,..I am sure I saw the ghost of
an 8 year old boy, shivering from the cold, and him not being able to
see the other end of the tunnel, where, unbeknownst to him
a 60 year old man was walking towards him from out of the gloom

I lived on the island of dogs . Always walked through there . On hot summer day us kids used to got down the tunnel to keep call. My mum said she walked through to get to Greenwich. On the way back she had me in a pram and bags of shopping the lift was closed she had to walk all those stair making her exhausted .
When I was 16 I was attacked these men down there . I went to work the next day they punched my face .it was all swollen.
I worked at the time the new Asda store . So many memories of the foot tunnel . ❤❤❤

I walked through the tunnel in 87 over to the disused docks, i was studying architecture and we had a project to design an airport building that spanned over the docks. A year earlier we also had a project to design a building to house the Gypsy Moth that was on display just next to the circular building entrance to the tunnel on the Greenwich side.

Me and my brother used to get a number 5 bus from hermit road and go to Greenwich ferry/walk back through the tunnel/  Go see the Cutty Sark. Then get back on the ferry/walk back through the tumnel/ Swim in the docks all for free! This was in early 80s x thanks for the memories  x

As a kid we often used the foot tunnels at both Greenwich and Woolwich and also the Woolwich ferry. The Rotherhithe tunnel is also an interesting one. It's the only tunnel that you can walk, cycle and drive through and as such is totally unique.

Keep this tunnel maintained forever.  Witness to a wonderful piece of engineering.for future generations to discover.

I had a paperboy job of selling evening newspapers at the entrance of the Island side.   For us kids it was our way south of the river to get to Grenwich with its park and museums.

I used the tunnel  every workday for over a year, I would sometimes go through it very early. One morning  I discovered  inflated condoms  tied  the the light fittings.  The tunnel  was in those days clean and tidy, even the lifts were clean and in working order.  How times have changed.

The tunnel has great acoustics.
I stamped on 100 paper roll caps between 2 coins in mid 1970's and a lift attendant came running to investigate.
I told him that some boys did it and "ran that way" pointing towards the other lift. 😁

An interesting history. Would you do one on the black wall tunnel in the future. Travelling to grandma's in late sixties early seventies it was always a highlight going under the Thames.

I'm a 72yr old Brit Boy, I used to go down to Woolwich, on the bus on a Saturday Morn to the Market, but I went to Ride the Woolwich Ferry, imagining a Sea board adventure, but when I tired of that the Greenwich foot tunnel was a favourite Shouting Echo Chamber, Happy Day's

One of the old Woolwich ferry boats was named Will Crooks. It made us curious to find out who he was and what he did.

The amount of knowledge here is fantastic,at shool i learnt nothing really,it was boring and i was forever getting substitue teachers etc,i have learnt more with these type vids and enjoy it, the people back then were hard,the poor they had to be to survive the brutal conditions , i never complain anymore  about anything really, i just remember how these  people had to live ,it makes me ashamed i ever moaned about anything , how ever your cicumstances in general ,these people were sommin else personality wise etc the din on the streets ,people begging horses,dockers ,the boot leggers etc it must have been so vibrant in communiction x

As a kid I travelled from Bromley to go skate boarding at Greenwich park then we found the tunnel by the cutty ark awesome the council tried to stop us no hopes
The best way to grow up was in London in the 60 70 80s

I used to live in London, and the foot tunnel was one of the ''sights'' I used to take my family when showing them around London.
It was also a convenient way to reach the Cutty Sark, Which had real family relevance as all four children, myself and three cousins had been born in the Cutty Sark!
NOT the ship, but my grandfathers home. He had spent his whole adult working life in the NAVY and he and his best mate had retired, and both had a house built side by side, My grandfather named his house ''Cutty Sark'' while his mate named his house ''Miranda'' after Cutty Sark's sister ship.

The lights stay on 24/7!

I Used to use this tunnel in the 80s /90s ; On A few ocasiones a busker playing a Didgeridoo the Reverberation  🎵🎶🎵🔉🎷Wazzzzz INCREÍBLE  ! ! 🐝🐝🐝  ;  Henceforth To Say ! Always A Good   TIP   * * *
