The market for retired LEGO might finally be changing...

We headed to National Brick Events in Leicester with one goal: find two of my most wanted retired LEGO sets - Grand Emporium and Disney Train & Station. Unfortunately, neither one made an appearance, but what we did find was completely unexpected.

There were more Ghostbusters HQs, Simpsons Houses and Stranger Things: The Upside Down sets than I've ever seen at a LEGO convention before - and some of the asking prices were much lower than I'd expected.

Has the retired LEGO market reached a turning point, or was this just a one-off? Join us as we hunt for rare LEGO, browse hundreds of retired sets, and see what bargains we can find.

Its called market saturation. The large group of AFOLs emerging over the last decade or so is now at its peak, or closing in on it, and now the market slows down, less movement, less new spending on older sets, so (local) surplusses start emerging.

I was at a flea market last weekend that's a local yearly event in my hometown in Indiana, USA; and I spent only $140! I bought about the same amount of stuff as usual, but spent much less (many things were five to ten dollars), but I picked up some used LEGO baseplates for $2-3 each (some of them the now retired blue baseplates). I think a part of the reason to why some of the prices are dropping is because people hate dragging the stuff around, and if something is $25 or $50 it stays with them for a long time, whereas for $5 or $10 it sells. I also wonder if it could be a side effect from the Bricks & Minifigs scandal, as far as LEGO set resale prices, It could be hurting everyone, along with any personal economic issues?

Think with all the alternative brick manufacturers, lego has to lower their prices or lose market share

I scored the Ghostbusters firehouse not too long ago for $600 without the box. Totally worth it.

Come to Hong Kong, especially ins point. Heaps of retired sets below what the retail was. If you want any set, they can source it for sure

My take is that the people who could afford $$$ prices, have bought what they want at $$$ prices. That leaves the rest of us with tight wallets and CC debt, meaning what those with $$$ willing to spend the rest of us aren't/can't and that means market has to adjust if it wants to keep selling. Not to mention Lego itself is releasing so so many set now that again, limited money (and space) means deciding between a $$$ new lego set vs $$$ retired is now a factor for the "rest of us".

THAT SAID per this video, prices are still high and its unlikely without a massive recession people aren't going to be selling them at $$$ prices if people are still willing to pay that..

Went to the Hull show earlier this year, many good sets at decent prices (less than eBay average 'sold' prices)

I live in New Zealand, and a lot of the larger Star Wars,Ghostbusters, and the Bricklink Transylvania building i wish were available here to buy for my collection of Lego.....

The art sets will certainly look great on the walls of the studio. That being said I would have enjoyed the video a lot more if you had bought something!

I would also love the Ghostbusters firehouse. Do you think Lego will remake it at some point? They should, right? Probably not much cheaper than 500 though ;P

Shuttle carrier aircraft is such a cool set, ngl.

Can't believe the Santa's Post Office set was on sale for £430 when it's still available at John Lewis for £89.99. Some prices just don't make sense!

My ghost busters house is still in th box it shipped in. A few years back it was pretty cheap mib.

It probably is changing - for a variety of reasons. Speaking for myself, I never bought a retired set or marked up set. But I've moved away from LEGO in some ways too as I enjoy building the alt brands more. Also, with Lego, I liked it when I would maybe get the odd set - like the Beatles submarine, or Flintstones sets, when they were maybe 50-60 dollars. Now, the value to me doesn't match.

My brain can be easily tricked. After a few months it doesn't remember if I built the Grand Emporium using Lego bricks, other bricks, if i only built it in leocad or studio or if I actually only read the instructions very slowly page by page without actually building anything.
Therefore I do not see the point of paying a ridiculous price for the real thing. I'm not in this hobby for the resell value of stuff and I never cared about it. I'm not a coin collector I collect stuff for the fun of spending time with it.
I have a Grand Emporium copyset but it is heavily modified, I changed the stuff they sell ( like in a real store). I moved the rotating door further out. I did the same to the cinema, where I added tiles to the floor and created a more modern ground floor with ticket machines.
That is another reason why I do not care about original bricks. I mix and alter sets heavily, so turning them back into 1:1 versions would be really time consuming and I do not see any fun in that, so it will never happen ...
