Noryangjin, the World They Live In
Noryangjin Station at 7 a.m. As the subway arrives, hundreds of people pour out. People walking as if being chased, with expressionless faces, carrying backpacks and holding exam books in their hands. Crossing the Noryangjin overpass—which they call a "passage connecting to the secular world"—another world known as the "Noryangjin Exam Village" unfolds. Packed with various cram schools, reading rooms, and gosiwons, they study for over 10 hours a day dressed in sportswear and slippers, finding the cheapest restaurant to eat at. Having mortgaged their youth to Noryangjin to survive the competition, their goal is singular: "Passing the exam."
Noryangjin, the World They Live In Youths of Noryangjin Dreaming of the Freedom of Failure
The season for retaking the college entrance exam begins with graduation. Those who may have tasted the bitterness of "failure"—perhaps the first bitter taste of their lives—flock to the cram school district of Noryangjin. With the word "challenge" engraved in their hearts instead of "frustration" or "giving up." Student Kwak Min-woo (22), who used to soothe his hunger with fish cakes at a street stall because he couldn't eat on time due to rushing through classes, discovered late what he truly wanted to study after studying subjects that didn't suit his aptitude. He chose to leave behind the college life he had struggled through and return to the status of a college entrance exam candidate. To avoid asking his parents for money, he works as an assistant for cram school lecture videos, investing his youth in his own life.
