We’re back in Kochi and taking on a massive food challenge! 🥘 After hearing that Kerala is the best place in India for authentic Middle Eastern cuisine, the Shortleft Travels family headed to Zatar in Edapally (near Lulu Mall) to see if it lives up to the hype.
From a "Southern Royal Platter" that looks big enough to feed an army to incredible Turkish-inspired kebabs, we’re putting our appetite to the ultimate test. We even got a special tour of their traditional Middle Eastern seating area and hookah lounge!

You guys from South Africa. But you are always in India.
I saw you working from Train. What about the little ones ? Are they not going to school ?
What's surprising is never seen you kids with mobile phones or devices. That's really amazing.
How is it even possible ?
That visit to Zaatar was a masterstroke of culinary exploration. The Alaji Kebab was a complete revelation—seeing the crew, who aren't exactly eggplant enthusiasts, get properly smitten with the Mutabbal base was a joy to watch. It looked incredibly succulent!
Then came the Royal Platter... good heavens, what an imposing spread! Noel, your 'Heavyweight Champion' analogy was spot on. Seeing the table groaning under the weight of all that grilled goodness was a proper spectacle. You lot tackled it with such finesse, though I’m still wondering where you found the room!
The finish at Sign Laban was the perfect palette cleanser. It’s fascinating that it wasn't as sugary as the Kasaragod version—sounds like a much more refined way to settle the stomach after such a feast.
But I’ve got a bit of a conundrum for you. I’ve noticed the family is a bunch of experts at dodging the beef dishes! In the land of the famous Kerala beef fry, are you lot just besotted with the local seafood and chicken, or is there a 'Shortleft' rule about staying away from the red meat?
Also, when the cameras aren't rolling at the ranch in Fort Kochi, what’s the home-cooked fare actually like? What are you lot whipping up for the daily 'scran' when you aren't hunting for hidden gems? And Noel, since coffee is clearly your lifeblood, what’s the 'house blend' like? Has a proper cuppa (tea) finally managed to sneak its way into your afternoon break, or are you staying strictly loyal to the bean?
