What do you do when stocked trout have seen every bright blob, FAB and lure in the box?

In this video, I tie one of my favourite FAB patterns for those days when the fish have had a bit of pressure and the usual bright colours just aren’t producing.

The idea behind this fly is simple — rather than showing pressured trout another fluorescent pattern they’ve already seen countless times, I like to tone everything down and fish a much more washed-out, subtle colour combination.

It’s still got all the movement and attraction of a FAB, but without screaming at the fish.

I’ll show you exactly how I tie the pattern, the materials I use, why I like these muted colours and, most importantly, when I’d choose to fish it.

🎣 In this video:
• How to tie my washed-out FAB pattern
• Why dull colours can work on pressured stocked trout
• When I move away from bright flies
• How I use FABs in my stillwater fishing
• Fly colour and presentation for picky trout
• A simple competition-inspired trout fly

It’s definitely one of those flies I like having tucked away in the box for when the fishing starts getting tricky.

Let me know in the comments — when trout get pressured, do you go brighter or more natural?

In this fly tying tutorial I show how to tie a subtle washed-out FAB fly for pressured stocked trout. FABs are one of the most popular stillwater trout flies, but when fish have been heavily pressured, changing from bright fluorescent colours to more muted and natural tones can be extremely effective. This pattern is designed for stocked rainbow trout that have become wary of traditional bright lures and attractor flies. If you enjoy stillwater fly fishing, competition fly fishing, trout fly tying, FAB patterns, blob fishing and learning how to catch pressured trout, this is a simple pattern worth adding to your fly box.
