Nerd Immersion

23,045 views

After spending the last couple of weeks digging through Arcana Unleashed: subclasses, feats, spells, magic items, evolving items, and more. I wanted to boil the whole book down to one question:

What are the 15 best things in Arcana Unleashed?

These aren’t necessarily just the most powerful options. I’m looking at the things I think are the most interesting, best designed, most useful, most flavorful, or just the ones I’m most excited to actually see at the table.

In this video, I’m counting down 15 standout options, mechanics, and ideas from across the book and explaining why each one made the list.

What did I miss? What would make YOUR top 15?

Familiar friends is incredible. I love the little part were the background says that your familiar bonded with you "when you were young, accompanying you throughout your adolescence" and that "your familiar is quick to remind you of the small joys in life". So much rp potential.

I agree about living spells. I made a living Cone of Cold in my campaign, and though “Magical” accident, it gained awareness and a personally. The party was able to persuade him to allow them to pass by his lair unharmed all for the cost of giving him a name. (They chose Frosty. A bit on the nose, but it satisfied the Living Spell.)

If you have an owl, you can use the Brute Battle Familiar to turn it into an owlbear.

I think the templet for the living spells would have been better.
A necromancer with a animate dead living spell would have been cool

I was just planning on playing an arcane archer and now I will use this new information to make it even better!

It's likely that the magical ammunition for the Arcane Archer was taken from the Thief series of games on PC. They have water arrows for extinguishing torches, rope arrows so you can climb etc.

That's what I thought of the moment I read it. Good source material there for players and GM's alike.

Familiar Friend on a Necromancer Wizard is SUPER powerful. Add in Battle Familiar (feat version) will turn that Skeleboi into a powerhouse.

I like the challenge skeletons not scaling for attack rolls brings. My favored solution is Magic Initiate (Druid) for Entangle. They will hit all but the highest ACs if the enemy is restrained. This might not be what you want if you prefer buffs or summons for your concentration, but I'm a ride or die debuff guy. Check out DMG pg. 83 to automate attacks if your DM lets skeletons act on the same initiative.

Moment of prescience is actually not nearly as good as you'd think. If you're missing with a big spell attack roll, you're not going to be able to use the spell anyway since the new casting rules state you can only cast a spell using a spell slot once per turn and you already used a slot to cast the "big attack roll" spell. In your example of Blade of Disaster, you're giving up two turns minimum (one to cast blade of disaster on round one), and your only 8th AND 9th level spell slots to just force a crit? In what world is that worth the investment? The blood amulet + magic missile is better than that in literally every way with a first level spell slot.

Familiar Friend + Battle Familiar

The Necromancer could use a little more work, a life steal with necrotic damage would be pretty dope. As for Arcane Archer, i feel like its still too restricted and a lot of their shots should just do the effect like blind, poison, charm without saving throws or having saving throws only to end them.

So, does Battle Familiar allow a familiar with unique abilities or attacks to retain them during the spell's duration? Its maddening to me to have the stuff that makes my familiar special blocked off to me for the sake of "game balance." Its one of the several things that make being a Ranger suck in the new rules too.

@ElocNodnarb 2 weeks ago

Is Battle Familiar castable as a Ritual?

@lowfuture4856 2 weeks ago

Honestly, ce feats and origin feats induces a powercreep effect. And gives up class identities for a lot of characters. Access to Fireball, to Shield, to Mass healing words is really something Druids will abuse, for instance, instead of using their signature but less powerful spells...

@Tanthalasa83 2 weeks ago

Btw just about living spell, you say it has to be evocation spell, so you cannot use cure wounds…but isn’t cure wounds evocation?

@Chonkypetz 11 days ago (edited)

Strongly disagree about the "moment of prescience" spell. It is a great idea in theory but way too expensive in execution.
There is no crit that is expensive enough to warrant usage of their own spell slot AND burning a whole level 8 spell in addition.

@JackU00 2 weeks ago (edited)

I dont know if I like evocation adapt.
It already feels like people only want to play mages and not martials, and now everybody will also take this feat aswell.
The effectiveness of it is just so high that you have to take it. Which then is leading to repetetiveness overall imo.

@Int_paladin 2 weeks ago

Between Battle Familiar and Evocation Adept I don’t see the point of having Martials or half-casters in a party. Maybe 6 levels of Paladin for the Aura on a multi class but that’s it.

Arcane Archer needs to use only bows

Call it something else if you want, but Archers use bows, arbalists use crossbows, gunners use guns, slingers? use slings. Theyre not just archers anymore
