Sorry this going to be a long read:
To give context, I’m in a gay interracial relationship. (I’m Black and my boyfriend is White) A month ago (July 2026) We were visiting Atlanta and were at a bar that Connor was at. We weren’t alone as my two cousins made us a group of four. We were at a table in our own conversation enjoying the night. My boyfriend is standing at the edge of the table instead of sitting and I’m in sitting in a chair intimately close to him. I see Connor glance over a couple times and I catch him eyeing my boyfriend. (My boyfriend is a tall masc presenting muscle bear) I think nothing of it it’s a gay bar people are going to look.
Connor decides to walk over to our table introduce himself to my boyfriend and does not acknowledge the other three of us. (Two black males, one black female) Connor shakes my boyfriend’s hand then leaves out the bar and my boyfriend finds a napkin in his hand. In said napkin is Connor’s phone number, Instagram handle, and a short message saying. “I live three blocks away”. My boyfriend immediately throws the napkin away. There’s hand sanitizer at the bar and my boyfriend damn near empties the thing. It’s a big eye roll at the table over what just happened.
The night continues and we eventually leave the bar. My boyfriend and I walk out holding hands and my cousins are right behind us. Connor is talking to a bouncer and immediately catches my boyfriend’s attention. My boyfriend looks at him and proceeds to kiss my hand right in front of him and the four of us laugh at him as we walk off to the next bar.
To add to MilesJai’s discussion, in my opinion (again just an opinion on the internet) I think gay men like Connor subconsciously have those white centered ideologies where he saw my boyfriend and automatically assumed he was single being the only white person present at the table. Connor isn’t the only white gay we’ve encountered where there’s an automatic assumption we aren’t together and are strictly friends. I’m not big on PDA and am not the holding hands strolling down the street type but in some gay spaces (majority white) I feel like I have to be and constantly signal some type of “we’re together” symbol in order to avoid those situations.
