Setting Out to Reconstruct the Appearance of the Hanseong Fortress Walls

The total length of the fortress walls surrounding Hanseong during the Joseon Dynasty was 18 km.

However, a significant portion of the walls could not escape indiscriminate urban development.

The production team, setting out to find traces of the vanished walls, used satellite imagery to verify their locations and attempted to reconstruct them.

The Secret of Fortress Construction: The Real-Name Construction System

How was it possible to construct a fortress wall spanning a staggering 18 km 600 years ago, without the development of modern and scientific technology?

The production team was able to find a clue by taking rubbings of the inscriptions carved into the walls.

Strong men from all over the country gathered in Hanseong to build the fortress walls!

We follow the wisdom of our ancestors who constructed the walls by employing the rational method of the real-name construction system.

To Decide on the Capital

King Taejo Yi Seong-gye, who personally surveyed every potential capital site, decided to relocate the capital to Hanyang just two months after his ascension to the throne. Why did Joseon have to relocate its capital from Gaegyeong to Hanyang?

Located in the center of the country, Hanseong was not only convenient for water transport and transportation but also suitable for defense, establishing itself as the undisputed capital for the 600 years of the Joseon Dynasty!

Close the markets in Gaegyeong!

The relocation faced opposition from founding meritorious subjects and wealthy merchants.

Their resistance, aimed at maintaining their vested interests, continued even into the reign of King Taejong... until finally, King Taejo banned the markets in Gaegyeong!!

How were the kings able to push ahead with the move to Hanyang at a time when the forces opposing the relocation held the vested interests of society?

The Forbidden City vs. Gyeongbokgung Palace

The most symbolic and pivotal buildings in capital construction are the palace, the Royal Ancestral Shrine (Jongmyo), and the Altar of the State (Sajik).

What similarities exist between the Imperial City of Goryeo and the palace of Joseon?

Unlike the perfectly rectangular Forbidden City of China, Hanseong, constructed utilizing the natural terrain, applied the norms of the *Zhouli Kaogongji*, which presented the basic principles to be observed when building a capital city. Through Hanseong, we look into the thoughts of our ancestors who valued harmony between humans and nature alongside a practical perspective.
