Hanging pictures at the correct height is not one I've heard of. Gonna give that one a go!
They always gave you 1 central ceiling light for chandelier etc. In barhs, kitchens, halls, it was a pullchain. Few outlets on walls.
Issue started in 60s with reflected glare in tv screen making for rewiring.
Yes about lamps guving softer lighting, so postwar houses used all swith controlled lamp outlets for rooms except dining room.
