Hollywood usually cleans up its myths, but this list drags them straight into the dirt. We cover fifteen R-rated fantasy films where the swords carry actual weight and the monsters run on physical mechanics instead of green screens. Directors throw their casts into freezing weather and strap them into heavy armor just to get the shot. We break down the physical toll behind the best dark fantasy features ever produced.

Glad you mentioned how underrated The 13th Warrior is.

My brother and I went to see Ferris Bueller at the movies when it came out. Soon we realised we were in the wrong room, and we were watching Highlander! Loved that film! Teaches you to just roll with your mistakes...

Of course The 13th Warrior is great. Directed by John McTiernan. He directed Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Last Action Hero (1993), The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

You put bobs in the teaser. I figured this was going to be a review of cheesy films. Instead I got a very thoughtful legit list with reasons. Well done.

Christopher Lambert was legally blind during the filming of Highlander. He has severe myopia and is medically unable to wear contacts. He memorized the sword choreography for the film

Excalibur is the best... no contest. Dragonslayer still holds up to this day.
Sword and the Sorcerer... is wildly unique. The hero is so over the top and it works because of it.
Army of Darkness, being the 3rd in the Evil Dead series, was a great finale with Modern man vs the Dark Ages backdrop to support its magical Necronomican themes.

The 13th Warrior in my top 5 of all time.

12:17 As a longtime fan of Excalibur, I can assure you that the bright, shiny armor worn by the knights in this movie was made out of ALUMINUM, not steel, which would have weighed 3x as much. Boorman did hire a real medieval armorer to make all the armor - this guy had been in the business of making replica armor for various museums, etc. This is explained in "Making Of" documentaries about Excalibur.

The 13th Warrior is one of those weird films I can't walk away from. I once stood behind my couch for two hours "on the way out the door" to run an errand. I just couldn't move, and it was a re-run on cable, for those who remember what that was.

Pans Labyrinth one of my top 5 all time faves. Phenomenal film!

Side Note: Heavy Metal was one of the original inspirations for the "Cyberpunk" genre, which didn't have a name until the 80's.
Before Akira and Ghost in the Shell (80's) defined the genre with animation, things like Heavy Metal and Judge Dredd, along with other comics from the 70's, were called "New Wave Sci-Fi"
...personally I like the name Cyberpunk a lot more

I saw Excalibur for the first time when I was probably waaay too young for it and to this day, I think it's still one of the most visually striking and eerie fantasy movies ever made. And the 13th Warrior is just a very underrated gem.
