Diameter too large:
1. Not enough compliance in tire component of suspension. This is bad for comfort, resistance to blowouts, and handling. You may like the (marginal!) increase in steering response on a track, but throw in the slightest imperfection in the road, and controllability and predictability both go out the window.
2. Wheel/tire combo is too heavy, too unaerodynamic, and too expensive compared to a more reasonable 19” wheel/tire.
3. Tires have too few replacement choices, so it’s nearly impossible to get the combination of qualities tailored to you.
The wheels are too wide in every Model 3 and Y trim compared to the tire width. (Curiously, this was not the case with the S/X until the Palladium refresh when they joined the party as well.) 235’s on the 3 and 255’s on the Y are a reasonable tire width given their respective weights and aspirations, but the 3 should have 7.5” wide wheels on non-performance trims and 8” wide on performance trim, not 8.5” and now 9”. Likewise, the Y should not have 9.5”; it should be 8.5”. My Porsche Boxster S had 8.5” wide rears with a 255 section tire; someone tell me why an SUV needs 9.5” even in the base trim!!
1. Curb rash, curb rash, and curb rash. Did I mention curb rash?
2. Having such a wide wheel does stiffen the sidewall somewhat and increase steering response. However, this is easily done with the correct tire choice, which is then easier to tune where it needs to be. This is one of the reasons the ride has been so hard for them to dial in.
3. Weight (unsprung, the worst kind!) is increased.
-4. To their credit, having a wider wheel does make the wheel to tire transition slightly more aerodynamic, but this is really not that large, and pales in comparison to all the negatives this choice brings.
