How I learned Vietnamese and raised bilingual kids in the US —
Audrey's full story from Maine to a Vietnamese-speaking household.
Audrey grew up in Maine, one of the least diverse states in the US,
speaking only English. Sixteen years later, she's fluent in Vietnamese,
married into a Vietnamese family, and raising two bilingual kids who
speak it at home. In this episode, she walks through the full journey:
a childhood spark with Quebecois French, falling for Mandarin in
college, then learning Vietnamese from scratch because her in-laws
don't speak English, and how that turned into raising her own kids
bilingual, so they can talk to their grandparents in Vietnam.
We talk about:
Learning Vietnamese as an adult with no prior connection to the language
Why she dropped French and fell into Mandarin instead
Learning an entire language for her in-laws
What it actually takes to raise bilingual kids in the US
The difference between learning a language and learning a culture
