I'm a long time professional bike mechanic and my bike is surprising in it's quality control, cone and cup bearings well greased and adjusted, and spokes tensioned and trued near perfect, tidy electrical cables, and the brakes are what you'd expect for a cable/mechanical discs. Mine came with near full coverage steel fenders.
If you want to improve the braking they should be "bedded in" by doing a series of 5 to10 mph rapid stops and release the brakes just before you come to a full stop like at 1~2 mph. Also helps to clean the discs with stove alcohol and paper towels, there's a good chance there's some manufacturing oils on the brake discs.
