What level do you think you're at? 🤔

@lawrencetaylor4101 4 months ago

Four years ago, I was 65 years old with Zero musical knowledge. For some reason, I saw one of your videos, I put it on pause and went to a music store and bought a cheap keyboard and started to learn music. The piano was too cheap, I went back to the shop and the owner let me trade up to a better digital keyboard. Now I am taking lessons with him, and it is the highlight of my week. This week I started playing from a Level 2 John Thompson Method Book and played some that I had never done with him. And he said I was becoming a good sight reader. Yesterday I happened to start playing this very piece. I am somewhere between a level 2 and a 3.
Merci beaucoup for opening up the wonderful world of the piano and music.

I'm level 1.. my eyesight also can't keep up. Overuse of device.. 😢 I learned Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement without sheet music and it took some months (had to take breaks for weeks as it is difficult figuring it out myself.) now I can play it whole comfortably. I'm here to learn how to read sheet music. Please make more like this that'll help me. 😅

Level 1 'The note decoder'. Seems impossible to reach next step. But I'm having a blast =) Thanks for the great videos

Great video…I probably a level 2. I started playing 2.5 years ago but had previously played violin and guitar when younger. I am now 68.

I am in-between levels 1 and 2. I just started in November of last year and my practice has been spotty as of late. As a self-learner It was interesting to see this so I could judge where I might be. Thank you for the video!

I came to learning myself to play the keyboard, in my case a Korg PA600 Arranger when I was 60, 4 years ago(I had to have an urgent operation to remove a diseased kidney so had 4 months recovery time from work and needed something to occupy myself during that time. The only bit of music I could play and even without thinking about it was the intro to Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter Festival. Because I can't read music like a musician, I devised a way on how to play songs and music I liked that I saw on YouTube. I'd watch the tutorial, then stop start the video tutorial writing every single note of the melody in letter form, with an arrow pointing up or down in relation to the preceeding note. This could easily take 3-4 hours depending how long the music was. So to answer your question. I'd say I was at level 1 to 1 and a half.....😉

I've been learning for 2 years and I'm definitely a beginner with sight reading
At this point it's just a question of keeping hold of the belief that if I keep practicing it will develop

Thank you for sharing this vlog. It was very helpful because it helped me understand my current sight-reading level and showed me what I need to focus on to improve.

Self taught pianist here. I have been stuck on level 2 for 14 years. Surprisingly, I can play complex pieces but compared to someone in higher levels, I work too hard to do so. Currently transitioning to level 3, 4 and 5 and doing it all at once, This has opened my eyes on the usefulness of practising your appreggios, building your chord vocabulary, especially 7th chords, etc. One step at a time.

I think I’m straddling L. 2 and L. 3. Depending on the music and the day, I’m able to access shapes. Thank you for a very interesting and informative video! 🤩

I am between level 1 and 2 and I am trying to recognize chords as I progress to learn a piece.
The Interesting thing to me is, that sight reading isn't just the reading itself, atleast for me, it is the combination of reading and execution.
Because I have to learn some patterns with my hand again and again and again. Even if I read the music right my Hands are not instantly doing the right thing.
So it is a bounce back between learning to read and learning to execute what i am reading. That is a very interesting experience. I love it :D

Level 2. Potentially level 1 😅. I am going to try out these strategies before I start the next piece!

Great video! You are one of the best piano teachers on YouTube, and I've found a lot of your videos very helpful.

I'm largely a self-taught pianist and have picked up the piano again in the last two years after taking about a 20-year hiatus from it. It's been a fun ride, but I'll admit that when I first started playing again, my sight reading was down to a level 2. Now, after a couple years of practice and some music theory, I've been able to progress to level 3, and I'm slowly moving into level 4.

I’m a violin player and only learn which keys are which on the piano and only know very few so now I’m learning to play piano! 🥹

There are parts of even the early levels that I should be doing... like identifying by name the note I am playing in level 1 which would really help reading the ledger notes. I didn't know what "shaping" meant. I've been focusing on fingering it out and only recently began focusing on flowing from one section to the other. But I've been doing a lot of these things from all levels, mostly in the past 6 months but have left some behind. Plus now I know what things are called. This is a great audit video.
