Real Families

A suitcase of letters, a missing uncle, and a war no one in the family would speak about. Historian Grace Karskens opens her father Wim’s secret archive and steps into Nazi-occupied Netherlands to face the truth.
Grace follows a paper trail from Camp Amersfoort to a brutal winter at Rees, where a fragile medical slip may have saved Wim’s life. But a different path lured his brother Jan: a Waffen-SS uniform, a pristine Wehrpass without a signature, and a final trace that vanishes amid the chaos of 1945. What really happened after the hospital in Graz? And why does Jan’s life seem to stop on paper?
Across the world, 79-year-old Ming Ballantong chases the Filipino father he never met. A wartime letter, a name confirmed by DNA, and a long-lost photograph reveal how a single wound changed everything—and unlock a family far larger than he imagined.
Two families. Two secrets. One unflinching journey into the records that refuse to forget. Watch to learn what the archives finally gave back—and what they never can.
