"Pro" gear makes no sense. Why we should disassociate it from cameras and lenses.

Just me on a walkabout doing some photography and ranting (ranting mostly lol). I want the term "pro" removed when talking about gear. I find it irksome lol.

So who thinks i'm mad..?

I think of a “pro” camera as one that I can shoot an event with. Like a wedding. The camera needs to have good low light capability, good autofocus and tracking, two card slots. I sold my R5’s and got two Nikon Zf bodies—not sure if the zf is considered a “pro” camera but I’m a pro and I use it. You definitely don’t need the most expensive gear, but there are definite things that you need from a camera if you’re doing paid work; things that not every camera has.

The only pro-camera is the one that you make good use of; It fits within your use case.

Its a hallmark of modern consumerist market segmentation.

What a lovely spot! Awesome shots as always 😊
A good photographer can take good photos with any camera. It's all about your eye, not the kit!

Other than price, a camera can be considered "pro" because of advance functions i.e. menu options. Beginners or others (a) may not need those features, and (b) they are complicated and trying to figure them out can take away from time learning photography. An X2D in the hands of a non-pro is overkill.

My favourite lens, that I’ve had for years is a 24-105 kit lens. Works for me. Some great images there again dude. 😊😊
Quality T shirt too 😊

The last photo was my favorite shot. I agree with you, marketing for these cameras has gotten out of control. Happy shooting

Everything is profession in the hands of a professional and excellence is negligible in the amateur. Gear is great, but it is only the brush from which a master paints his masterpieces.

For some wild life applications some of those “pro” functions can be very useful. prob depends on what you are trying to shoot. I wouldn’t obsess over the label though .

It's very simple. The gear is not "pro" because it's more expensive. It's "pro" because professional photographers will invest more in gear that is more reliable and that helps them do their job faster and easier. Enthusiasts will usually make some compromises and purchase less expensive gear, since photography is just their hobby. Nobody is saying you can't make great photos with cheap cameras. It will just take more time and more effort, which is not acceptable if you earn for living with photography.

Cheers appreciated , I'm old and skint, and cheap used gear is where I live, visited NYC a few years ago as a birthday gift, regret we didn't get to Roosevelt , looks a good photo hunting ground.

I’m right with you with the x2D, that camera looks like it was crafted from magic materials not found on Earth.

You have a very good eye for a good photo 😊

I'm grabbing another z5. I made some good bnw photos with that 40mm Nikon lens. It's the work that makes up professional not the gear

Most professional photography is done by architects, designers, engineers, scientists, estate agents, archivists etc. because it’s usually not affordable or practical to hire a photographer. It’s also important to know your subject, so people learn the photographic skills as part of their main job. The equipment required is as varied as the subject matter it’s needed for, from phones to point and shoots, all the way up to unique custom built cameras.

The most significant professional photography this year was done by astronauts, not “photographers”, and they used mostly ten year old Nikon cameras and iPhones. The images are stunning.

I recently bought the Nikon z5, it was bundled with a smallish lens, most of my photography is done with an iPhone, so this camera is plenty enough for my uses, I will be buying some larger glass for it in the future, it takes a nice image.

I recently picked up the Canon R10 for woodland and wildlife photography and this little camera is amazing. The AF is amazing. Comparing the R10 to flagship cameras 10-15 yrs ago I would technically have a "professional" camera in my hands for 1/2 the price of todays cameras. Granted, I do wish it was weather sealed but there are ways around that. I think this professional thing is part gatekeeping making vulnerable people think they'll never be good enough unless they have a 5k camera in there hand and they wont be accepted in the big boys club.

You can shoot video on Sony FX5 and get excellent results but any movie set will be renting multiple Arri Alexa cameras for way more than your Sony FX cost. And believe me, you won't likely be even able to turn it on, let alone get a decent picture from it.
