I ran Kalk on my Red Sea 170 for about 2 years through a doser. I was running it mostly at night opposite my light schedule. Kept my PH stable and above 8. Corals love it! I stopped running it to simplify things. Now I am just running AFR 24 hours. It doesn't work quite as well. But the slower growth in my cramped tank is a blessing at this point. lol

I love Kalk. I ran my first reef tank on Kalk for 4 years with great success.
This time round, I've been using All for Reef, and adore it. But will be adding Kalk as the secondary alk source in the near future.
I personally ran a Kalk stir, and dosed it multiple times over night to help boost pH. Wonderful additive

KALWASSER IS THE JUICE.

With this method you’ll be changing ATO pumps often

Uso aqui TMB e recomendo.... Reator de Nilsen

I ONLY add Red Sea ab zero dosing except for amino
My acro has better polyp extension than any pictures on google. You DO NOT need to dose. Water change and feed your fish 3 times a day

.6 mL per liter of kalk to my tank for over a year with great results.

Your tanks look so clear…

Love using Kalk from a dosing pump. Dosing a lot less two part and don’t need co2 scrubber anymore. So much more economical

Have you done a vid on the mastertronic and how does it go? and the reagents themselves do you use oem or aftermarket?

I'm surprised that you've only started to use KW recently. It's been a standard practice in the hobby for decades. In the 40+ years I've kept reef tanks I've always run it on a lights-out /  night schedule to stabilize pH. A slow drip peristaltic dosing pump is the key. In the U.S. most reefers use Mrs. Wages pickling lime. Its food grade and cheap.

As someone researching this hobby before getting into it, I love the explanation and reasoning. Could you possibly cover reef rock and any related data similar to your previous “reef science” video on water parameters/light? There seems to be a lot of opinion on weight per tank volume, live vs dry, specific types, porosity (do micropores get clogged with algae during cycling reducing efficacy?), etc. I get that it’s not an attractive topic, but looking to create a scape with room for swimming and coral growth. Thanks!

If using an optical ATO, watch out for the surface film / precipitates. Can lead to big problems. Also, the ATO pump can ware down really quick do to the precipitates - I recommend mounting your pump off the bottom a wee bit (there are some good Tunze 3D printed options out there). Also, when stirring the Ca(OH)2 / Kalk, do so gently to minimize CO2 and precipitation.

30ml…😂! I’m dosing 200ml 😢. Kalk is def on the agenda this year!

I've only used kalk for one resone and that to keep my ph stable. People don't realize that a stable high ph will stop RTN from happening. And also causes fast growth in SpS corals.  I does evey night and dose the average evaporated water that evaporates within twenty four hours. This keeps my ph at 8.5 at night and no dosing during the day and my ph during the day stays at 8.4.   . This is dosed when light are turned off and keeps dosing till light are back on. I use saturated kalk only in a sealed container.

Great video man! I’ve been wanting to get into kalk for a while, and was wondering what would be the best way to tie it into the ATO reservoir

Can Kalk dosing make dKh stables, and it can be use alongside with AFR?
Can I mix the kalk with the ATO water?

I have a theory. My 2 part (Nyos) is dialed in. I’m not using much at all, I went down a point in a week before dosing.
My theory: dosing kalk at a very low rate will increase uptake as growth will accelerate. I’m thinking just 24ml fully saturated per day to test my hypothesis. Shouldn’t be enough to cause a wild swing either way. If the alk is going down and not up, that’ll be all of the proof I need.

I used kalk in my ATO previously. At 7,000ft, zero humidity (basically) and temperature swings outside from 40-90f in the same day, it was just so unpredictable what my ato was using day to day. But… I did see excellent growth before an eventual crash. It’s an obvious difference from two part in my experience, so why not get the growth of kalk and the stability of two part?

So it doesnt really matter if you are adding too much kalkwasser at all? Just keep the doser suction of the bottom and try not to let the undissolved kalkwasser build up too much? The drum also has to be airtight or it will absorb co2 from the air and then not adjust alk in the aquarium?

I’ve been using kalkwasser since couple of months. I am dosing only at night in 30 minute intervals with dosing pump nearly evaporated amount and ATO barely working on my nano. My Ca is stable around 420-430 ppm and the alkalinity is 10 dKH. So how is yours?
