16mm color film,
West Berlin: A City Without Surroundings - Life on the Island
Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education 1983
An interesting retrospective on life on the island
1. Work:
Berlin as an industrial center. The most important industries (electrical industry, chemical-pharmaceutical industry, textile processing, printing, mechanical engineering, and vehicle manufacturing) are presented, and the labor shortage is discussed (guest workers instead of daily commuters), Turkish market in Kreuzberg.
2. Political Situation:
Aerial shots show the Berlin Wall in the city center; the importance of the three Western powers for the city's security; visitor traffic between the two parts of Berlin.
3. Supply/Waste Disposal:
Beusselstraße wholesale market; the importance of truck traffic for the city's food supply. Transport connections with West Germany (map trick). Problems of energy supply, exemplified by electricity generation (lack of a grid connection), fuel supply (necessity of stockpiling), air pollution from emissions, and watercourse pollution from cooling water runoff; waste management in the city, exemplified by waste disposal (waste incineration and transport of waste across the border to landfills in East Germany).
4. Cultural significance:
International Congress Center, international events (film festival), conferences (experts in front of the Villa Borsig); museums (Egyptian Museum, National Gallery), State Library; theaters (Grips Theater, Schaubühne).
5. Recreation:
Neighborhood festival, recreational area along the Havel River.
Conclusion:
Aerial photographs of the section of the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate looking towards East Berlin.
